The
Maroons played in their first conference game on Friday night against
Hamilton. The Hawkeyes began the game with a five minute touchdown
drive to take an early 7-0 lead. The Holland Christian defense forced
a fumble a couple minutes into the second quarter. That offensive
drive ended in a seven yard touchdown pass from Jared Stygstra to
Lukas Bruxvoort. Each team had an interception in the final minutes
of the second quarter, but neither team was able to capitalize. The
score was knotted up at 7-7 at halftime.
Hamilton
broke the tie by making a field goal from about 30 yards out. A few
minutes later, Holland Christian powered through the Hamilton defense
with three consecutive first downs. After a few runs, passes and
penalties, Stygstra found Bruxvoort again for a 14 yard touchdown
pass to take the 14-10 lead at the end of the third quarter. The
Maroons' defense protected the lead throughout the majority of the
fourth quarter, giving Holland Christian the 14-10 victory.
With
tonight's victory, the Maroons improve to a 2-3 overall; 1-0
conference record. All four remaining games are against conference
rivals. Holland Christian will play at Holland on October 3.
