2014 Lacrosse March 28 vs. Haslett

The Maroons returned to the turf on Friday night to host Haslett, one of the top teams in the state. Holland Christian took a lot of shots in the first half, but failed to find the back of the net. Haslett's 7 goals gave them a 7-0 lead at halftime.


The Maroons were able to score three times in the second half, but failed to overcome the deficit. Haslett finished with the 15-3 victory, handing the Maroons their first loss of the season. Jake Kalkman scored one goal, and Justin Dykgraaf scored two. Holland Christian will look to pick up the pieces as they travel to Lowell on Tuesday, April 1.

2014 Lacrosse March 22 vs. Rockford

Holland Christian played their second game of the season on Saturday afternoon against their rivals from Rockford. Joe Spoelhof scored three times for the Maroons in the first quarter. Luke Harbottle added another goal, and the Maroons took a 4-1 lead into the second. Allyn Anthony and Joe Spoelhof each added a goal in the second quarter, but Rockford was able to score four times in the quarter, cutting the Maroons' lead to 6-5 at halftime.

 Jon Nykamp's two goals in the third quarter gave the Maroons an 8-6 lead heading into the final quarter. Isaac Nelson and Joe Spoelhof's goals put the Maroons ahead 10-8 midway through the fourth quarter. With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Rockford scored, narrowing Holland Christian's lead to just 10-9. The Maroons held on to the lead, however, and took home the 10-9 victory. Joe Spoelhof finished with five goals, while Jon Nykamp finished with two goals and four assists. This victory gives the Maroons a solid 2-0 record to start the season. Holland Christian will travel to Grand Haven on Tuesday, March 25, in search of their third consecutive victory.

2014 Lacrosse March 19 vs. Zeeland

Despite the below freezing temperatures, Holland Christian played their first game of the season on Wednesday, as they welcomed Zeeland to the turf. The first quarter ended with a 3-0 lead in favor of the Maroons, with goals coming from Micah Bieri, Joe Spoelhof, and Jon Nykamp.
Nykamp began the second quarter by scoring two more goals. Joe Spoelhof continued the Maroons' first half dominance by scoring back-to-back goals midway through the second quarter. In the closing seconds of the first half, Jon Nykamp found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the game. The Maroons took a commanding 8-1 lead into halftime.
Joe Spoelhof and Jake Kalkman each tallied two goals in the third quarter. Freshman Luke Harbottle also scored for the Maroons, giving them a 13-3 lead after three quarters.
Allyn Anthony, Joe Spoelhof, and Micah Bieri all scored in the fourth quarter, sealing the 16-5 victory for the Maroons. In his first varsity start, sophomore goalie Brad Houskamp maintained the Maroons' lead by making multiple amazing saves.

Holland Christian will host Rockford on Saturday, March 22, at 1 PM at the HC Turf.

2013-14 Boys Basketball STATS---24 Games


2013-14 Boys Basketball March 10 @ Wyoming Godwin Heights (Regionals)

After winning the District tournament just a few days prior, Holland Christian traveled to Wyoming to take on Godwin Heights in the first regional matchup. Coming into the game, Godwin Heights was undefeated, and was ranked first of all Class B teams.
Holland Christian began the first quarter with a monstrous dunk by Kyle Steigenga. That quarter ended with a buzzer beater basket by Sam VanderSluis, and was fouled on the shot. VanderSluis made the free throw, sending the Maroons into the second quarter ahead 18-9. Godwin Heights stepped up their game in the second quarter, however, and sent the teams into halftime tied 27-27.
The Maroons scored 11 points in the third quarter, but Godwin's 14 points pushed them into the fourth quarter with a 41-38 lead over Holland Christian. The Maroons put up nine points in the fourth quarter, but were unable to regain the lead. Godwin Heights ended up winning the contest by a score of 57-47. Kyle Steigenga led the Maroons with 16 points. Sam VanderSluis scored 11, and Jared Dykstra scored finished with 8.

With tonight's loss, Holland Christian's season comes to a close with an overall record of 18-6. This season was the first season under Coach Mejeur, and it was full of a lot of accomplishments, including a Conference Co-Championship, and the District Title. Also, Kyle Steigenga finished his basketball career at Holland Christian with an outstanding 1,241 points, making him the highest scoring Maroon in history. Seven seniors played their last game for the Maroons tonight: Kyle Steigenga, Justin Dykgraaf, Max Wierda, Nathan Walters, Nick Hill, Jared Dykstra, and Josh Maas. Altogether, these seniors combined for 1,043 points on the season. Overall, it was a great season for the Maroons!

2013-14 Boys Basketball March 7 vs. Zeeland West (District Championship)

Holland Christian returned to the Civic Center for the last time of the season on Friday Night, as they played against the Zeeland West Dux for the District Championship. In the regular season, the Maroons and the Dux split the series 1-1, and were Co-Champions of the OK Green.

Holland Christian ended the first quarter on top 10-9. Nathan Walters scored nine points in the first half, including a three-pointer in the final seconds to boost the Maroons to a 26-24 lead at halftime.

The Maroons outscored the Dux 13-12 in the third quarter, giving them a 39-36 advantage heading into the final quarter of play. Holland Christian scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, 16 of which coming off of free throws. The Maroons' defense shut down the Dux in the fourth quarter, and the game ended 59-48 in favor of the Maroons. Tonight's victory earns Holland Christian the District 49 Title, and a berth in the Regional tournament.

Kyle Steigenga led all scoring tonight with 21 points. Nathan Walters finished with 11 points. Sam VanderSluis had an amazing game both offensively and defensively. VanderSluis scored 10 points, and held Zeeland West's Jordan VanDort to only three points in the center position.



 Holland Christian's overall record improves to 18-5. The Maroons will begin the Regional Tournament on Monday, March 10, at Wyoming Godwin Heights High School. Their game will begin at 8PM and will be against Wyoming Godwin Heights.

2013-14 Boys Basketball March 5 vs. Allendale (Districts)

Holland Christian returned to the Civic Center on Wednesday night, as they hosted Allendale in the second round of the District tournament. Holland Christian scored seven points in the first quarter. The powerful Maroon defense held Allendale to only a free throw in the first quarter, and took a 7-1 lead into the second. Allendale didn't make a field goal for the first ten minutes of the game. Kyle Steigenga scored nine points in the second quarter, sending the Maroons into halftime with a 21-11 lead.

The Maroons continued to dominate in the third quarter. Thanks to great performances by Sam VanderSluis and Kyle Steigenga, the Maroons doubled their first half score, and took a commanding 42-23 lead into the final quarter.

The Maroons added eight points in the fourth quarter to seal the 50-34 victory. Kyle Steigenga led the Maroons with 18 points. Sam VanderSluis scored ten, and Jared Dykstra finished with eight. This victory pushes the Maroons to the District championship game.

After the Holland Christian game, Zeeland West and Unity battled for a trip to the District championship against the Maroons. Zeeland West ended up winning that game by a score of 55-53. Holland Christian will face Zeeland West for the District Championship on Friday at 7PM. In the regular season, the Maroons and the Dux split the series 1-1, and were Co-Champions of the OK Green.

2013-14 Boys Basketball March 3 vs. Hamilton (Districts)

Holland Christian began their postseason on Monday night against Hamilton. The Maroons jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter, but Hamilton ended up taking a 10-7 lead into the second quarter. Sam VanderSluis scored the Maroons' first six points in the second quarter, giving Holland Christian the 22-20 lead going into halftime. Nathan Walters and Sam VanderSluis each scored eight points in the first half.

Kyle Steigenga scored ten points, including two dunks, for the Maroons in the third quarter. Holland Christian's defense limited Hamilton to seven points, extending Holland Christian's lead to 37-27. In the fourth quarter, five different players combined for nine successful free throws. Holland Christian ended up defeating Hamilton 59-37.

Holland Christian had 10 different scorers tonight. Kyle Steigenga led the Maroons with 18 points, and Justin Dykgraaf scored 9. Sam VanderSluis and Nathan Walters each tallied 8 points.


 Holland Christian's next game will be against Allendale at 6PM on Wednesday, March 5, at the Civic Center. If Holland Christian wins that game, they will face the winner of Unity/Zeeland West for the District Championship on Friday.
