The Holland Christian community united
at the Civic Center on Saturday night for a basketball game between the Staff and Alumni to raise money for the Holland Christian
band and orchestra's upcoming trip to Florida. Mr. Mike Phelps was
the coach for the Alumni and Mr. Troy Stahl was the coach for the
Staff. The Alumni dominated in the first quarter, outscoring the
Staff 10-4. The second quarter had a lot more action than the first.
For the Staff, Kyle Pett scored seven second-quarter points. On the other
side of the court, Ben Hill scored eight for the Alumni. At halftime, the
Alumni had a slim lead of 33-32.
The third quarter was also shifted
slightly towards the Alumni. Carissa Verkaik, the only female
alumnus, scored four points in the third quarter. Mr. Koeman countered
Verkaik with six points for the Staff. The third quarter ended with a
score of 46-45 in favor of the Alumni. The teams continued to battle
throughout the entirety of the fourth quarter. Despite the Alumni
hitting five three-pointers in the fourth quarter, the Staff was able to
finish with the 65-64 victory.
The leading scorer for the Alumni was
Ben Hill, who scored 17 points. Carissa Verkaik and Brian Konynenbelt
each scored eight. For the Staff, Caleb Nykamp led with 16 points,
followed closely by Mr. Kevin Koeman with 15.
