2013-14 Boys Basketball December 30 VS. Grand Rapids Christian

Coming off a 17-day break from the action, Holland Christian returned on Monday to host Grand Rapids Christian. The Eagles had control for the majority of the game, but the Maroons continously fought back and kept the game within reach. Going into halftime, the score was 30-26 in favor of the Eagles.


In the fourth quarter, Holland Christian outscored Grand Rapids Christian 18-13. With one minute remaining in the game, the Maroons cut the deficit to 58-54, but they ended up falling just short with a final score of 63-57 in favor of the Eagles. Kyle Steigenga led the team in points with 16. Jared Dykstra hit all three of the Maroons' three-pointers; Jared Dykstra finished with 12 points. The Maroons had a collective field goal percentage of 55%. With this, the Maroons record becomes 2-1. The Maroons will return to the Civic Center on Friday to host Grandville.

2013-14 Girls Varsity Competitive Cheer December 14 @ Comstock Park

Holland Christian's varsity cheer team began their season on Saturday. 18 teams, including Holland Christian, participated in the invitational. Holland Christian scored 216.7 in the first round. In the second round, the Maroons scored 186.4. In the third and final round, Holland Christian scored 255 for a grand total of 658.54. With that score, the Maroons earned second place behind Comstock Park, who hosted the event. “I was very pleased with how the team performed today! I was very proud of the effort put in by the girls and the results that came out of their hard work! We look to make improvements and keep moving forward!!” commented Coach Gernaat following her team's performance. Holland Christian be back in action on Saturday, January 4, as they will participate in the Grandville Invitational.

Offensive Stats over 1st two games


2013-14 Boys Basketball December 13 @ Zeeland East

The Maroons traveled to Zeeland on Friday, as they took on the Zeeland East Chix. Holland Christian's six first quarter free throws accounted for half of their first quarter points; Holland Christian led 12-7 after the first quarter. For the remaining three quarters, Holland Christian was able to hold that lead. Going into halftime, the Maroons led the Chix 21-15.
In the fourth quarter, the Maroons' lead began to constantly increase. Kyle Steigenga threw down his second dunk of the game with a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. Holland Christian rallied for a collective total of 23 points in the fourth quarter. The game ended in a final score of 50-34 in favor of the Maroons. Max Wierda had an incredible performance, as he shot 6/8 free throws, and shot 2 of the Maroons' 3 three-pointers. Max Wierda and Sam VanderSluis each scored 12 points. Kyle Steigenga shot 4/7 free throws, and 7/10 from inside the arc. Kyle Steigenga led the Maroons with 18 points. With this victory, the Maroons improve to 2-0 on the season. Holland Christian will look to continue their win streak next week Friday, when they will host Grand Rapids Christian at the Civic Center.

2013-14 Boys Basketball December 10 VS. Grand Haven

The Maroons tipped off their season on Tuesday Night, as they welcomed the Grand Haven Buccaneers to the Civic Center. Both teams got off to a decent start, but Grand Haven jumped out to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Kyle Steigenga blocked a Grand Haven shot, and took the ball down the court and finished with a dunk, sparking the Maroons' first half energy. The Maroons continued to stick with the buccaneers, making the score to 25-19 in favor of the Buccaneers at the end of the first half.
Holland Christian's deficit became 10 points with three minutes remaining in the game. The Maroons were able to fight back to tie the game 49-49 with under a minute left to play. With 6 seconds left on the clock, Kyle Steigenga was at the free throw line. He took two shots, and made them both. The Maroons went on to win 51-49. Holland Christian shot 17/20 free throws collectively. Kyle Steigenga led the team with 19 points, followed by Sam VanderSluis with 11, and Jared Dykstra with 8. The Maroons will be back in action on Friday, December 13, as they travel to Zeeland East to face the Chix.

2013 Boys Varsity Football October 25 @ Unity Christian

Holland Christian played their last game of the season on Friday night, as they took on the Unity Christian Crusaders. In the first quarter, Unity fumbled a punt return and the Maroons were there to jump on the ball at the 31 yard line. Immediately after that, Caleb VanderLugt connected with Kyle Steigenga for a 31 yard touchdown pass. Bryce Eggers tacked on the extra point making the score 7-0 Maroons. Unity was able to string together multiple runs to score a touchdown of their own to make the score 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Unity Christian was able to score an 87 yard touchdown run making the score 14-7. After a Holland Christian punt, Unity was able to score another touchdown, extending their lead to 21-7. With a minute left in the first half, the Maroons were able to battle back to score a 32 yard VanderLugt-Steigenga touchdown. Holland Christian decided to go for a trick play 2-point conversion. With both the offensive and defensive lines on the side of the field, only the snapper, the holder, and the kicker were in the middle of the field for the Maroons. For Unity, there were only a couple defenders in the middle of the field. Holland Christian snapped the ball to Steigenga, the holder, who came up with the ball and threw a short pass to a wide-open Casey Meyaard to make the score 21-15. With only seconds left in the first half, Unity Christian missed a short field goal attempt, making the halftime score 21-15.
Towards the end of the second half, Unity was able to score a touchdown, and they were able to capitalize on the 2-point conversion giving them the 29-15 lead. After a couple of possession changes, Unity was able to score another touchdown making the score 36-15. On the next Holland Christian drive, Caleb VanderLugt connected with Jake Kalkman for a touchdown. Eggers added the extra-point to make the score 36-22. The game would end with that score of 36-22 in favor of Unity Christian.
With this, the Maroons season comes to a close with a record of 4-5. Holland Christian would like to thank all of this year's seniors for contributing their efforts on the field: Caleb VanderLugt, Kyle Steigenga, Justin Dykgraaf, Isaac Boes, Matt DeKock, Cody Machiela, Seth VanAst, Austin Hossink, Austin Shoemaker, Carter Gethin, Tyler VandenHeuvel, Cam Rotman, Josiah Coleman, Tyler Windemuller, and Justin VanNuil. 2013 Boys Varsity Football October 18 @ Byron Center

 The Maroons traveled to Byron Center on Friday night, as they took on the Byron Center Bulldogs. In the first quarter, Brandon Riemersma recovered a Byron Center fumble to put the Maroons in scoring position. That drive ended in a 32 yard field goal by Bryce Eggers to put the Maroons up 3-0. Byron Center fought back in the second quarter to score a touchdown. However, the Maroons' defense was able to prevent the Bulldogs from scoring the 2-point conversion. The half ended with a score of 6-3 in favor of the Byron Center.
In the third quarter, Byron Center was able to capitalize with a touchdown to make the score 13-3. Byron Center tacked on a field goal in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to make the score 16-3. With only two seconds remaining in the game, Caleb VanderLugt completed an 18 yard touchdown pass to Kyle Steigenga to make the final score 16-9. Steigenga finished with 113 yards on six receptions. Caleb VanderLugt threw for 211 yards on 17 completions.
Holland Christian is an even 4-4 on the season heading into their final game of the season. Holland Christian will play their last game against Unity (at Jenison High School) on Friday, October 25.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer October 17 VS. Unity

 Holland Christian faced off against Unity Christian in the district semifinals on Thursday night. The muddy field took its toll on both teams over the course of the night. Unity Christian struck first, as they scored two minutes into the game off of a header that found its way past the diving Luke Schepers. After the first half of action, the score remained 1-0 in favor of Unity. The second half also began with an early Unity goal. This time Unity scored off of a loose ball in front of Schepers. Holland Christian fought back with determination and managed a couple more quality scoring chances. With 20 minutes left. A ball rolled right on the Unity goal line, but a sliding Unity Christian defender was able to clear the ball at the last second. A minute later, Marcus Hoekstra hammered a ball past the Unity Goalie, however the goal was later called off because of an offsides call against the Maroons. The game ended in a 2-0 Unity Christian win. With this, the Maroons season comes to a close. “I wanna say thanks to everybody. A soccer season is a journey, there are times where you are going to be higher than high and there are going to be times where you are lower than low” said Coach DeBoer to his team. Holland Christian finished this season with a record of 11-5-4.

 Holland Christian would like to thank all of this year's seniors for their great careers as soccer players representing the Maroons. This year's seniors are Abe Wierda, Isaac Brace, Marcus Hoekstra, Alex Keizer, Evan Leppink, Rilee Bouwkamp, Devan Hoekstra, and Cody Machiela. Coach DeBoer says about this senior class; “As a program, we strive for excellence, both as soccer players and individuals. This Senior class has done that and has set a model for classes to come at Holland Christian.”

2013 Boys Varsity Soccer Playoffs October 15 @ Zeeland East

The Maroons played their first postseason match on Tuesday, as they took on the Zeeland East Chix. During the regular season, the Maroons and the Chix tied their matchup 0-0. Tonight's game was another evenly matched game. Both teams had many offensive opportunities in the first half. Led by goalie Luke Schepers, the Maroons defense was unbeatable. Schepers had a great save toward the end of the first half when he was able to block a Chix breakaway opportunity. By the end of the first, neither team found the back of the net.

 With 15 minutes remaining in the game, the Maroons were able to capitalize. Abe Wierda placed a corner kick right in front of the Zeeland goal, where Micah Bieri was there to head the ball into the net giving the Maroons the 1-0 lead. The Maroons were able to finish out the game with that 1-0 victory. With tonight's win, the Maroons advance to the next stage of the postseason. Their next game will be against Unity Christian at 7pm, and the game will also be held at Zeeland East's field.

2013 Boys Varsity Football October 11 VS. Holland

Holland Christian played their final home game of the season on Friday in search of their 4th consecutive victory. Holland Christian began the game with great offense. The Maroons finished their first offensive drive with a short touchdown pass from Caleb VanderLugt to Kyle Steigenga to put the Maroons up by a score of 7-0. Holland fought back on their next drive to score a touchdown of their own to tie the game up at 7-7. The Maroons immediately responded with another touchdown on their next drive. VanderLugt once again connected with Steigenga for a 53 yard touchdown pass to put the Maroons up 14-7. Holland's next offensive drive ended a touchdown, but the Dutch failed on the extra point to make the score 14-13. The Maroons responded immediately with an 80 yard touchdown pass from VanderLugt to Isaac Boes, who fought his way past multiple defenders to get into the end zone making the score 21-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter began with another successful Holland Christian drive. VanderLugt connected with Steigenga once again for another touchdown to extend the Maroons lead to 28-13. Holland Christian added another touchdown at the end of the first quarter, as VanderLugt threw a short pass to freshman Caleb Brink to make the score 35-13 Maroons at halftime.
Holland managed to score an 8-point touchdown towards the end of the third quarter, cutting the Maroons' lead to 35-21. In the 4th quarter, VanderLugt threw two 20-yard touchdowns: The first was to Jake Kalkman, and the second was to Steigenga, making the score 49-21. In the final minute, quarterback Jared Stygstra ran the ball into the end zone sealing the victory for the Maroons by a score of 56-21.
Bryce Eggers had an excellent performance, as he was 8/8 on extra point attempts. The duo of Caleb VanderLugt and Kyle Steigenga also had an incredible game, as they connected with a total of four touchdowns.

 “We came out inconsistent in the first half but once we got going we played a lot better...I'm also happy that we were able to get everyone in the game again tonight!” said Coach Caserta following the Maroons' 4th consecutive victory. With tonight's win, the Maroons improve to 4-3 on the season. Holland Christian will be back in action on Friday, October 18, as they travel to the home of the Byron Center Bulldogs.

2013 Girls Varsity Golf Regionals October 9


The Maroons traveled to Byron Center on Wednesday, to participate in the Regional tournament. Despite the stiff competition, the Maroons were able to score well. Bre Luurtsema lead the Maroons with a score of 98. Lydia Wiersema shot a 101 on the day. Nola Tolsma, Sarah Vroon, and Candace Hoitenga rounded out the scoring with 106 apiece. In the end, the Maroons finished in 6th place out of a total of 13 teams. South Christian finished in first place, followed by Lakewood in 2nd, and Grand Rapids Christian in 3rd place. With this, Holland Christian's stellar season came to a finish. Seniors Nola Tolsma, Kate Ellens, Candace Hoitenga, Sarah Vroon, and Bre Luurtsema all concluded their careers at Holland Christian with an amazing season!

2013 Boys Varsity Soccer October 9 @ Unity


The Maroons played their last game of the regular season on Wednesday, as they traveled to the home of the #1 ranked Unity Christian Crusaders. Both teams had decent opportunities throughout the game. The first half was spent primarily with the Maroons playing defense. Holland Christian goalie Luke Schepers did not allow any goals throughout the first half of play. Offensively, the Maroons were not able to capitalize on any of their scoring chances. The second half began with a Unity Christian goal two minutes into the half, making the score 1-0 Unity. Despite the great effort, Holland Christian was not able to tie the game up, and the game ended in a score of 1-0. “This team has done a tremendous job of getting better everyday...they are continuing on their journey to set a new standard for HC soccer!” said Coach DeBoer following the game. With this loss, the Maroons finish their season with a 10-5-4 record heading into the postseason. “We're looking forward to a tough district that has two of the top teams in the state in it (Holland and Unity)” says Coach DeBoer. Holland Christian will begin their postseason on Tuesday, October 15, as take on the Zeeland East Chix. The game will be held at Zeeland East, and kickoff will be at 6pm.

2013 Boys Varsity Soccer October 7 VS. Byron Center

Holland Christian played their final home game of their season on Monday night, as they hosted the Byron Center Bulldogs. Before the match, Holland Christian honored this year's seniors: Rilee Bouwkamp, Isaac Brace, Devan Hoekstra, Marcus Hoekstra, Alex Keizer, Evan Leppink, Cody Machiela, Levi Snoeyink, and Abe Wierda.
The Seniors got the Maroons on the board first. Isaac Brace fed Marcus Hoekstra with a perfect feed, where Hoekstra was able to finish it past the Byron Center goalie to put Holland Christian up 1-0. The Maroons added another goal when Allyn Anthony was able to head a ball into the back of the net off of a Cody Machiela throw in to make it 2-0 Holland Christian. The Maroons added a third goal when Jake Kammeraad had a fired a beautiful shot past the Byron Center goalie in the final minutes of the first half to make the halftime score 3-0.
The second half was the same as the first; in complete Holland Christian control. After numerous great shots at the Byron Center net, Holland Christian was able to capitalize. Abe Wierda fired a bullet at the Byron Center goalie who could not control the ball, and Kyle Wassink was there to tap in the rebound making the score 4-0.

 With this victory, the Maroons improve to 10-4-4 on the season. Holland Christian will play their last game of the season on Wednesday, October 9, as they travel to the home of the Crusaders of Unity Christian.

2013 Boys Varsity Football October 4 @ Hamilton

Coming off of a spectacular victory in their previous game, the Maroons returned to action on Friday night as they took on the Hamilton Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes began the game with a long kickoff return all the way to the Maroons' 17 yard line. However the Maroon defense was able to prevent any more damage, as they forced a turnover after a failed 4th down attempt. The first Maroons drive consisted of many short runs, most of which by quarterback Caleb VanderLugt. That drive ended in a short pass from VanderLugt to Jake Kalkman to put the Maroons up 7-0. After a great effort by the Maroons defense, Holland Christian regained possession of the ball. After a few short runs by VanderLugt, Kyle Steigenga was able to come down with the ball in the end zone to put Holland Christian up 14-0. Hamilton's next drive forced them to punt the ball away. But when the ball was snapped, the ball found its way to the end zone over the punter's head, where Holland Christian was able to dive on the punter to get a safety to put them up 16-0. Holland Christian's next drive consisted of a string of passes, which ended with Isaac Boes taking a short pass into the end zone to make it 23-0 in favor of the Maroons at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began with Jared Stygstra in for the Maroons at quarterback. Stygstra had multiple long passes in his first drive, primarily to Kyle Steigenga and Isaac Boes. Stygstra was able to finish that drive with a short touchdown run to put the Maroons up by a score of 29-0. Shortly thereafter, the Maroons were able to string together a series of passes, which ultimately ended in a short touchdown run by VanderLugt to put the Maroons up 36-0 at the half.
Hamilton was able to strike first in the second half, as they threw a 50 yard touchdown pass to cut the score down to 36-6. The next Maroons drive, quarterback Jared Stygstra was able to complete a couple long passes. The first was a 40 yard pass up the middle to Kyle Steigenga to put the Maroons in striking distance. The second was also to Steigenga who was interfered with in the end zone, but still came down with the ball to give Holland Christian the touchdown to add to the Maroons lead of 43-6.
In the fourth quarter, Hamilton was able to score a total of three touchdowns to cut the lead to 43-27, however the Maroons were able to hold on and finish the game with a final of 43-27.

Coach Caserta said following his team's victory, “The first half was great, I was excited to get everyone in the game tonight...That will help us down the road! We just have to take it one week at a time, and we have to come out ready to play against Holland” The Maroons improve to 3-3 on the season. The Maroons will seek their 4th consecutive victory on Friday, October 11, as they host the Holland Dutch. 

2013 Girls Varsity Golf Conference October 4


Holland Christian participated in the OK Green Conference meet on Friday morning, on what was a beautiful day for golf. Holland Christian was one of six teams playing in the match. Lydia Wiersema led the Maroons with her personal best score of 89 on the day. Behind Wiersema was Bre Luurtsema with a 90, and Candace Hoitenga with a 91. Sarah Vroon, Kate Ellens, and Nola Tolsma each finished with a score in the upper 90s. Wiersema was able to sink six pars, and had a total of 37 putts on the day making her the top medalist on the day. Nola Tolsma also had a couple amazing rounds, as she shot two birdies on the day. Luurtsema, Hoitenga, and Tolsma all represented Holland Christian in the top ten on the day. Because of the girls' stellar performances, Holland Christian was able to come out on top, winning the OK Green Conference Championship. Behind Holland Christian was Holland in 2nd place and Byron Center in third place. Following the meet, Coach Velthouse said, “I'm proud of these girls for what they accomplished today!...we are playing well heading into regionals, we're hoping to finish in the top three so we can go back to State!!” Regionals will take place at Railside Golf Course on Wednesday, October 9.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer October 2 @ Holland

The Maroons took on their cross-town rivals of the Holland Dutch on Wednesday, on what was sure to be an intense match. In the last Holland Christian-Holland match the game went into overtime and ended in a 1-1 tie. Holland came into tonight's game with a #2 ranking in the state, behind only Unity Christian.
Tonight's game was back and forth a lot, both teams were able to have multiple scoring opportunities. The Dutch were the first on the board, as they were able to capitalize on a corner kick 15 minutes into the game to put them up by a score of 1-0. The Maroons had their fair share of opportunities as well. Marcus Hoekstra had a shot that drilled the crossbar with 18 minutes remaining in the game. Joe Spoelhof also had a great opportunity late in the game, Spoelhof had a great shot but it was blocked by the diving Holland keeper. With five minutes remaining in the game, the Maroons were able to get on the board. Rilee Bouwkamp was able to get a head on a ball off of a long Cody Machiela throw in, which ended up in the back of the net to tie the game up 1-1. At the end of regulation, Holland Christian was tied with Holland 1-1.
In overtime, Devan Hoekstra had a perfect cross to the front of the net, where Marcus Hoekstra was able to tap it in to the goal. However, the referee called the goal off due to (Marcus) Hoekstra being offsides. The Dutch were able to capitalize off of a shot with four minutes remaining in overtime, to give the Dutch the 2-1 advantage. The time ran out, and the Dutch finished on top by a score of 2-1.

 “I'm proud of the way that you are resilient...We just need to continue to build upon the things that we've worked on. ” said Coach DeBoer to his team following the 2-1 loss to Holland. “Except for the first few minutes, we dictated the tempo of the game in terms of style of play and possessing the ball.” added DeBoer. The Maroons will be back in action on Monday, October 7, as they play Byron Center in their last home game of the season.

2013 Girls' Varsity Golf Jamboree September 30 @ Hamilton


The Maroons traveled to the home of the Hamilton Hawkeyes to compete in the Hamilton Jamboree on Tueday. Six teams, including HC, were involved in the jamboree. Altogether, the girls did a good job golfing on the day. Bre Luurtsema led Holland Christian on the day with a score of 46. Following Luurtsema were Kate Ellens and Lydia Wiersema each scoring a 48. Sarah Vroon shot a 50, and Nola Tolsma and Candace Hoitenga each shot a 52. According to Coach Velthouse, “Our score was a little higher than I would have liked it to be”. But Holland Christian played well enough to earn 1st place on the day. Following Holland Christian was Unity, Holland, Hamilton, Zeeland West, and Byron Center respectively. Holland Christian will be back in action on Friday as they play in the Conference match at West Ottawa.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 30 VS Hamilton

The Maroons returned to the field in search of another win on Monday, as they hosted the Hamilton Hawkeyes. The Maroons were able to take advantage of a lot of errors made by the Hawkeyes. Bryce Eggers began the game's scoring when he crossed the ball to the Hamilton goal, where it hit off of a Hamilton defender and found its way into the net to put the Maroons up 1-0. Hamilton was able to fight back to score a goal of their own 10 minutes later, to tie the game up at one goal apiece. With nine minutes to go in the first half, the Maroons managed another goal off of a long Cody Machiela throw in that bounced off a Hamilton defender and found its way to the back of the net. Allyn Anthony finished the 1st half scoring with a nice shot that made it past the keeper to close out the first half with a score of 3-1 in favor of the Maroons.

 The second half didn't have as much scoring as the first half. The only goal came with 3 minutes remaining in the game, when Hamilton was able to fight for a goal to cut the Maroons lead to just one goal. The Maroons were able to fight off the Hawkeyes in the last couple minutes, to seal the 3-2 victory for the Maroons. With this victory, the Maroons improve to 9-3-4 on the season. Holland Christian will return to action on Wednesday, October 2, as they take on their cross-town rivals of Holland High School.

2013 Boys Varsity Football September 27 VS Grand Rapids Catholic Central

The Maroons welcomed Grand Rapids Catholic Central to the turf on Friday for what was sure to be an exciting match. The Maroons played great on both sides of the ball throughout the entirety of the match. Isaac Boes led the Maroons with a long interception return at the end of the first quarter, which ended in a 20 yard touchdown pass from Caleb VanderLugt to Kyle Steigenga to put the Maroons up 7-0. Grand Rapids Catholic Central fought back and scored a touchdown of their own at the beginning of the second quarter to knot the game up at 7-7. Catholic Central was able to capitalize off of an interception on the next drive to put them up by a score of 14-7. Holland Christian capitalized on their next drive as Caleb VanderLugt threw a 45 yard touchdown to the wide-open Casey Meyaard down the field to tie up the score at 14-14. Holland Christian closed out the first half with a short touchdown pass from Caleb VanderLugt to Kyle Steigenga to put the Maroons up by a score of 21-14.


 Grand Rapids Catholic Central began the second half with a touchdown to tie the game up at a score of 21-21. In the fourth quarter, Isaac Boes had another amazing interception, this time Boes returned the ball a total of 75 yards, placing the ball 15 yards from the goal. That drive ended in a 6-point touchdown pass thrown by VanderLugt and caught by Steigenga to put the Maroons up by a score of 27-21 with five minutes remaining. With one minute remaining in the game, Grand Rapids Catholic Central was able to scramble for a touchdown, and they were able to make the extra point to put them up by a score of 28-27. The Maroons began their last drive with all of a minute on the clock. VanderLugt launched a deep ball to Isaac Boes to put the Maroons on approximately the 15 yard line. After two failed attempts to the end zone, Coach Caserta decided to put Sophomore kicker Bryce Eggers in with 15 seconds left on the clock to give the Maroons the victory. Eggers was able to place the kick between the uprights to give the Maroons the lead. The time expired, and the game ended at 30-28, in favor of the Maroons. Coach Caserta said following the victory, “We were able to pass the ball on them a little bit tonight, and our defense played great! Isaac Boes played unbelievable with 3 interceptions and numerous key receptions!” The Maroons look to continue their 2-game win streak on Friday, October 4, as they travel to Hamilton to take on the Hamilton Hawkeyes.

2013 Girls' Varsity Golf Jamboree September 25 @ Byron Center


The Maroons traveled to Byron Center on Wednesday, as they competed in the Byron Center Green Jamboree. The Maroons had a great day overall, as all six girls were able to shoot under 60. Bre Luurtsema and Lydia Wiersema led the Maroons' scoring today, both were able to finish with a score of 49. Kate Ellens shot a 52 on the day, Nola Tolsma shot a 54, and Candace Hoitenga and Sarah Vroon were able to seal the Maroons victory with 59 apiece. “Our scores went up today due to fast greens. The girls struggled today with short chips and keeping them on the green, however all of the teams struggled and their scores reflected.” The Maroons will be back in action on Tuesday, October 1, as they travel to Hamilton to take part in the Hamilton Green Jamboree.  

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 25 @ Zeeland West

The Maroons traveled to Zeeland today, as they took on the Zeeland West Dux. The majority of the game was spent in the Zeeland defensive zone, as the Maroons continued to attack the Zeeland net. The Maroons got on the board first, as Allyn Anthony finished a perfect cross to the front of the net to put them up 1-0. Holland Christian tacked on another goal with a minute remaining in the first half, with Abe Wierda's incredible individual effort to juke past the defender and hammer it past the goalie to end the first half at a score of 2-0 in favor of the Maroons.

 The 2nd half was also almost entirely in the Maroons' possession. Abe Wierda started the second half scoring with a bullet from 25 yards out that was drilled right past the Dux' goalie to extend the Maroons' lead to 3-0. Brandt VanHeest finished the scoring with an amazing header off of a Cody Machiela throw-in to seal the win for the Maroons by a score of 4-0. “We set a new standard to get better every day, and we are getting better every day. Tonight we made some great aggressive plays on the ball that won us a lot of opportunities” The Maroons will return home on Saturday, September 28, as they host Hudsonville High School at 1:00pm.

2013 Girls' Varsity Golf Match September 24 VS Forest Hills Northern


The Maroons returned home on Tuesday as they hosted Forest Hills Northern. Holland Christian's Bre Luurtsema and Lydia Wiersema each shot a 43 on the day. Candace Hoitenga and Nola Tolsma were also key in the Maroons' performance today as they were able to finish with a 49. Forest Hills Northern also played exceptional, however they were no match for the Maroons, who combined were able to finish with one of their best scores on the season. Holland Christian closed out the day with a combined score of 183, and Forest Hills Northern finished with a score of 193. The Maroons look to repeat today's performance on Wednesday, September 25, as they travel to Byron Center to compete in the Byron Center Green Jamboree.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 23 VS Unity Christian


The Maroons returned to field again on Monday, as they took on their rivals from Unity Christian. The game was scoreless until Unity was able to capitalize on a rebound in front of the net seven minutes int the game to put them up by a score of 1-0. The Maroons had a few opportunities at the net in the first half but they were unable to finish any of them. The second half began similar to the first, predominantly in the Maroons' defensive zone. Unity was able to score their second goal with eight minutes left in the game, to put them up 2-0. Despite the great effort by the Maroons, Unity was able to finish the game with a 2-0 victory. Coach DeBoer commented after the game, “We had a couple mental lapses that (Unity) capitalized on...but they are going to take advantage of the opportunities that are given. We just need to continue to work together and get better every day.” The Maroons' season record is currently at 6-3-4. Holland Christian will look to get another win on Wednesday, as they take their talents to Zeeland to face off against the Dux.

2013 Boys Varsity Football September 20 @ Forest Hills Eastern

The Maroons took on the Forest Hills Eastern Hawks on Friday, in what was sure to be a great match. Forest Hills Eastern started the scoring off with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter to put them up by a score of 14-0. Holland Christian fought back in the second quarter with a series of great runs by quarterback Caleb VanderLugt, which ultimately led to a one yard touchdown run by VanderLugt. The Hawks fought back for a 6-point touchdown to extend their lead to 20-7. The Maroons responded with a 6-point touchdown of their own, as VanderLugt connected with Kyle Steigenga for a 25 yard touchdown pass to make the Halftime score 20-13 in favor of the Hawks.
The Maroons started the second half with a couple great passes. One of which was a long pass to Kyle Steigenga to put the Maroons in the red zone, the other was a short touchdown pass to Matt DeKock to tie the game up at 20 points apiece. On the next Hawks drive, the Maroons were able to force a key fumble, which was picked up by Holland Christian's David Williams. That Maroons drive ended with another VanderLugt rushing touchdown to put the Maroons up by a score of 27-20. At the end of the third quarter, the Maroons had another key offensive drive. Matt DeKock led the Maroons to the 10 yard line with multiple running plays, and Caleb Vanderlugt was able to finish that drive with his 3rd rushing touchdown of the night. The Hawks began the 4th quarter with a touchdown pass to make the score 34-27 in favor of the Maroons. Holland Christian added another touchdown with three minutes remaining in the game, as Caleb VanderLugt ran for another touchdown to extend the Maroons lead to a score of 41-27. The Hawks were able to add another touchdown to cut the lead to just seven points, however the Maroons held on and earned their first win of the season by a score of 41-34.
Coach Caserta said following the first win of the Maroons' season, “The first half was a struggle, our defense wasn't on top of their game, but we really played well in the second; we were physically a lot better.” The Maroons look to get their second win of the season on Friday, September 27, as they welcome Grand Rapids Catholic Central to their home turf.




2013 Girls' Varsity Golf Invite September 20 @ Thornapple-Kellogg

The Maroons participated in the Thornapple-Kellogg Invite at Yankee Springs today, as they competed against seven other teams. As a whole, each of the girls were able to score well. Leading the scoring for the Maroons was Bre Luurtsema, who ended the day with a 93 on the day. Luurtsema's 93 also ended up to be the 8th best score of the day. Nola Tolsma also came out strong today, as she was able to shoot a 97 on the day. The Maroons finished in third place, behind North Pointe and Lakewood. Following the third place finish for the Maroons, Coach Velthouse commented, “Our goal today was to beat Lakewood or Wayland because they are in our regional this year. We accomplished that today by beating Wayland!” The Maroons will return home on Tuesday, September 24 for their next match as they host Forest Hills Northern.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 18 @ Byron Center

The Maroons returned to the field on Wednesday, as they took on Byron Center High School. It didn't take long for the Maroons to get on the board: Abe Wierda was able to finish a ball from Rilee Bouwkamp only two minutes into the game to put the Maroons up 1-0. Byron Center was able to fight back to get a goal in the last minutes of the first half to tie the game up. However Holland Christian bounced right back to the lead, as Marcus Hoekstra scored off of another Bouwkamp pass to put the Maroons up by a score of 2-1 at the half.

 The second half was in complete control of the Maroons. The Maroons started the half off with another first-minute goal. Isaac Brace scored a beautiful goal that was assisted by Micah Bieri to put the Maroons up 3-1. It was only a minute later that the Maroons got their next goal, Andrew VanDeWalker knocked one in off of a Cody Machiela throw-in to add to the Maroons' score, making it 4-1. With eight minutes to go in the game, Isaac Brace scored his second goal of the game off of a perfectly placed free kick from just outside the box, adding another goal to the Maroons' total. Brandt VanHeest finished the game with another goal off of a Cody Machiela throw-in to seal the game for the Maroons. The final score was 6-1 in favor of HC. Holland Christian will return to their home turf on Monday, September 23, as they host the Unity Christian Crusaders.

2013 Girls' Varsity Golf Match September 17 @ Zeeland West


After coming off of a great performance just the previous day, the Maroons got back to their game today as they played in the Zeeland West Green Jamboree. Six teams, including HC, were involved in the jamboree. All of the girls played exceptionally today, as all five of the Maroon golfers were able to score in the 40s. Coach Velthouse says, “Candace (Hoitenga) is on fire this week” as she was able to finish with another low score of 43. Kate Ellens shot a 46 on the day. Bre Luurtsema, Sarah Vroon, and Nola Tolsma all finished with a score of 48. At the end of the day, the Maroons were able to finish in first place. Holland Christian finished with a total team score of 185, which was 17 points ahead of the runner up of Zeeland West (202). Holland Christian will be back in action of Friday, September 20, as they participate in the Thornapple-Kellogg Invite at Yankee Springs golf course.  

2013 Girls' Varsity Golf Match September 15 VS West Ottawa


Holland Christian welcomed the West Ottawa Panthers to their course on Monday, on what was a perfect afternoon for golf. The Maroons played well and made great shots throughout the match. Candace Hoitenga shot her personal best round, as she shot a 40. Hoitenga was also able to sink a putt from 30 feet out to get an eagle. Lydia Wiersema also had an incredible shot as she was able to birdie hole #15 with a 40 yard chip in. Bre Luurtsema shot a 43 on the day, Nola Tolsma shot a 50, and Kate Ellens finished with a 52. In the end, The Maroons shot a 185, and the Panthers were able to shoot a 175. Coach Velthouse said following the match, “I'm very proud of Candace today with her personal best score and her eagle!, It's fun to see these younf girls mature and become awesome golfers!” The girls will play their next match on Tuesday, September 17, as they participate in the Zeeland West Green Jamboree at Crestview.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 16 VS Holland

Holland Christian was fired up on Monday night, as they welcomed Holland High to their home turf. It was all back and forth between the two teams, and both teams had numerous quality scoring chances throughout the first half. The game remained scoreless until Holland was able to break the tie 20 minutes into the first. After a lot more competitive soccer, the half came to a close by a score of 1-0.
The second half also had a lot of opportunities on both sides of the field. On the Maroons side of the field, goalie Luke Schepers was able to make a myriad of saves that kept the Maroons in reach of Holland High. The Maroons got on the board with 13 minutes to play in regulation, when Marcus Hoekstra fired a bullet from 20 yards out that found its way past the Holland keeper. The game stayed knotted up at one goal apiece for the remainder of regulation.
The teams continued to battle throughout the 20 minutes of overtime. Despite the great intensity put forth by both teams, neither team was able to get past the opponent. The game came to a close after overtime with a final score of 1-1


 According to Coach DeBoer, “If we defend well we can play with anybody, and if we stay organized and stay together we can compete with anyone.” That was the case on Monday night, as The Maroons defense was able to control the Holland Dutch. The Maroons' next match will be held at Byron Center High School on Wednesday, September 18, at 6:45.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 14 @ West Ottawa

The Maroons traveled to the home of the West Ottawa Panthers tonight, in what was sure to be a great matchup. The game was full decent opportunities on both sides of the field, however neither team was able to put a shot in the back of the net. Goalie Cody VanderLaan led the Maroons to their 4th consecutive shutout, and Holland Christian's 8th of the season. “Defensively, we did a nice job of limiting their quality opportunities, we just need to continue to battle and get better.” said Coach DeBoer following the 0-0 tie. Holland Christian will return home on Monday, September 16 as they host the Holland Dutch.

2013 Boys Varsity Football September 13 VS Zeeland West

It was another perfect night for football on Friday, as the Maroons took on the Dux of Zeeland West. The first portion of the game was scoreless until the Dux got an 8-point touchdown halfway through the first quarter. Holland Christian responded with a touchdown of their own as Caleb VanderLugt connected with Justin Dykgraaf for the touchdown to make the score 8-6. The Dux added another 8-point touchdown to close out the first quarter with a score of 16-6. The second quarter started with another Holland Christian touchdown. This time it was Caleb VanderLugt to Kyle Steigenga making the score 16-12. Steigenga also had an outstanding performance as the Maroons' punter, as he was able to place two punts in the first half within two yards of the end zone. The Dux were able to add two touchdowns, making the halftime score 30-12.
The second half started with a couple touchdowns by Zeeland West, putting the Dux up by a score of 46-12. On the special teams, Casey Meyaard and Alex Bosch each had a pair of exceptional kick returns which led the Maroons to multiple scoring opportunities. The Maroons were able to add another passing touchdown from VanderLugt to Steigenga, along with a two-point conversion QB sneak by VanderLugt. The Dux were able to add another touchdown in the closing seconds of the game, however the extra-point attempt was blocked by the Maroons' Austin Shumaker. The game ended with a final score of 52-20, in favor of Zeeland West.
Coach Caserta said following the game, “I thought we did some great things tonight, but the story of the game is that we made too many mistakes...if it wasn't for the mistakes we would have been right there with them.” The Maroons will look to get their first win of the season as they travel to Forest Hills Eastern on September 20.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 11 @ Hamilton

Coming off two consecutive shutouts, The Maroons traveled to the home of the Hamilton Hawkeyes on Wednesday. Similar to the past two games, the match started out with Maroon dominance. Only 15 minutes into the game, it was the sophomore who put Holland Christian on the board. Bryce Eggers scored with the assist from his sophomore counterpart Andrew Keizer. The Maroons were able to put another shot in the back of the net only 10 minutes later, when Colin Bennett netted a ball from Kyle Wassink. Defensively, the Maroons could not be beat. Goalie Luke Schepers and his defenders did not let any past throughout the entirety of the game. The Maroons finished the game with a final score of 2-0, which earned them their 3rd consecutive shutout. The Maroons will look to get another as they play the West Ottawa Panthers in Hope's Van Andel Arena. The game will kickoff at 7:00.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 9 VS. Zeeland West

It was a beautiful night for soccer on Monday, as the Holland Christian Maroons took on the Zeeland West Dux. The Maroons were in the complete control of the game, as nearly 90% of the time was spent in the Maroons attacking zone. Sophomore Bryce Eggers got the Maroons on the board first, as he had an amazing juke around the Dux defender, and then hammered it past the goalie. The Maroons added another goal in the closing seconds of the first half as Marcus Hoekstra tapped in a goal after multiple rebounds in front of the Dux net to put the Maroons up by a score of 2-0 at the half.
The Maroons continued their dominance in the second half. The beginning of the second half began with multiple attempts at the Zeeland West net, none of which found the back of the net. This was until Abe Weirda had a perfect volley shot from 20 yards out find its way to the goal. The Maroons finished the game with a dominant score of 3-0. “We did a great job possessing the ball tonight” says coach DeBoer, “And we executed all of the things that we practiced” DeBoer added. The Maroons look to extend their win streak on Wednesday, September 11, as they travel to the home of the Hamilton Hawkeyes.

2013 Boys Varsity Football September 6 VS South Christian

The Maroons continued their season on Friday night as they took on the Sailors of South Christian. It was the Maroons' offense that started off the game. Caleb Vander Lugt threw an 80 yard touchdown pass to Kyle Steigenga on the 2nd play of the game to put the Maroons up 7-0. South Christian responded with two touchdowns of their own which gave the Sailors the 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. Defensively, Holland Christian Senior Matt DeKock intercepted a South Christian pass, which led to a great offensive effort by the Maroons. The Sailors added one more touchdown at the end of the first half, making the Halftime score 21-7 South Christian.
The South Christian Sailors began the half with the possession, but the powerful Maroons defense was able to hold them to only a field goal. The Maroons' defense also forced and recovered a South Christian fumble. The Sailors ended the scoring with a touchdown, making the final score 30-7 South Christian.

 Coach Caserta said following the match, “We made good strides this week...we just have to keep taking positive steps.” The Maroons look to turn their season around on Friday, September 13, as they welcome the Zeeland West Dux to their home turf.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 5 VS. Thornapple-Kellogg

The Maroons ran out on the field strong on Thursday, as they Welcomed Thornapple Kellogg High School Trojans. It didn't take long for the Maroons to get on the board, as they scored only three minutes into the game. Marcus Hoekstra shot a bullet past the Trojan's goalie from 20 yards out to put the Maroons up 1-0. Defensively, Maroons' goalie Luke Schepers made numerous amazing stops at goalie. Schepers made an incredible diving stop on a Trojan penalty kick. Schepers also made back-to-back diving stops on two shots right in front of the goal. Allyn Anthony continued the scoring for the Maroons, as he placed one in the back of the net off a rebound of his own penalty shot. Marcus Hoekstra scored his second goal of the game off of a beautiful through ball by Bryce Eggers. The Maroons ended the half with the commanding lead of 3-0.

 The second half started out just as good as the first. Rilee Bouwkamp netted an amazing shot to put the Maroons up 4-0. Marcus Hoekstra also scored his 3rd goal of the game. Joe Spoelhof fed Hoekstra a perfect through ball which Hoekstra ended up sliding past the goalie. The game ended with the final score of 5-0 Maroons. “We did a great job taking advantage of the opportunities tonight” said Coach DeBoer following the 5-0 victory. The Maroons will return to their home turf on Monday, September 9, as they face off against the Zeeland West Dux at 7:15.

2013 Girls' Varsity Golf Jamboree September 4 @ Unity



After coming up just short the day before, the girls returned to the course as they participated in the Unity Green Jamboree. Bre Luurtsema set a team record with (6) 1 putts, and she finished with a total of 13 putts on the day as she shot a 45 overall. Sarah Vroon also shot a 45 on the day as she had her best outing of the year. Candace Hoitenga also had a one of the best outings of her year as she finished with a 46 on the day. Hoitenga also set a record today, as she sank the longest putt of the year, as she made it from 40 feet away! Kate Ellens also kept her score under 50, which sealed the win for Holland Christian. The Maroons will be back in action on Thursday, as they welcome the Chix of Zeeland East at 3:30

2013 Girls' Varsity Golf Match September 3 VS Grand Rapids Christian


 It was a beautiful day for golf on Tuesday, as the Maroons hosted Grand Rapids Christian. All of the girls had played great throughout the entirety of the game. Senior Bre Luurtsema shot a 44 on the day, Junior Lydia Wiersema shot a 45, senior Candace Hoitenga shot a 47, and senior Kate Ellens shot a 48. Despite the Maroons great game, Grand Rapids Christian came out on top with a final score of 184-180. “Their 5th player played well today to make the difference in the match. I hope we bounce back tonight and get a win in our Jamboree at Pigeon Creek”. Their next match will be the Unity Green Jamboree, which will be played at 3:30 at Pigeon Creek on Wednesday.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer September 3 VS. Grand Rapids Christian


September 3, 2013
The Maroons returned home on Tuesday as they faced the Eagles of Grand Rapids Christian. For the first few minutes, both teams had excellent scoring opportunities. However Grand Rapids Christian was the first to capitalize in the match. The Eagles scored their goal on a cross to the middle, where the Grand Rapids striker was there to finish it. The first half came to a close with the Eagles on top 1-0.

 The 2nd half started in Grand Rapids Christian's favor, as they got a goal only three minutes into the half, as they got a nice ricochet in front of the Holland Christian goal. Later in the half, Holland Christian had a quality scoring chance. Alex Keizer sent the ball from half to Marcus Hoekstra in front of the net, where he got a head on it, however the Eagles' goalie was there for the save. With 10 minutes left in the game, Holland Christian goalie Cody VanderLaan made an amazing diving stop that saved a shot that was shot from only 10 yards away. The Eagles added a goal with three minutes left off of a header by the Grand Rapids forward to make the final score 3-0. Coach Spoelhof said following the match, “There is opportunity for growth in finishing”, “And taking advantage of the opportunities that we are given...” added Coach DeBoer. The Maroons will be back in action on Thursday as they host Thornapple-Kellogg High School at 7:15.

2013 Girls Varsity Golf Invite August 29 @ Hamilton


The Varsity golf participated in the Hamilton Invite on Thursday. Despite the intense heat, all of the girls scored well. Bre Luurtsema played well today, as she shot a 96, including five pars in her performance. Kate Ellens also played well, as she shot a 101 on the day. Ellens used a pitching wedge, and placed the ball 8 feet from the hole. Ellens ended up sinking the putt, giving her a birdie on that hole. Sarah Vroon shot a 97 on the day with 4 pars, and she 'drove the ball well off the tee' says Coach Velthouse. Candace Hoitenga shot a 97 and had 3 pars. Hoitenga was the most consistent golfer of the day, with a 48 in the front, and a 49 in the back. Holland Christian ended up in 5th place overall; St. Joseph ended up with the victory. Coach Velthouse said following the match, “I'm proud of the girls for doing their best in the heat today...Hope to come back the the holiday weekend strong and refreshed!”. Holland Christian's next match will be on Tuesday, September 3. It will be played at home (Winding Creek Golf Course), and it will start at 3:30.  

2013 Boys' Varsity Football August 29 @ Zeeland East


The Maroons kicked off their season on Thursday, as they faced off against the Zeeland East Chix. The Maroons started the game off with strong defense. Holland Christian's Alex Bosch had a key interception, which prevented a Chix touchdown in the first quarter. The scoring began early in the second quarter, when the Chix kicked one through the uprights, making the score 3-0. The Chix added three more touchdowns, making the score 24-0 at Halftime.
 The Maroons started the 2nd half with strong offense, however they were not able to capitalize on the chance. The Chix managed two more touchdowns early on in the fourth quarter, making the score 37-0 Chix. The Maroons began their offensive drive with five minutes remaining in the game, when Isaac Boes returned a kickoff 70 yards, before he was finally taken down. That drive ended in a touchdown thrown by Jared Stygstra and caught by Kyle Steigenga. The Chix added one more touchdown in the final minutes to make the final score 44-7. Holland Christian will try to get their first win of the season as they open their season at home on Friday, September 6 as they host the South Christian Sailors.  

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer August 28 @ Zeeland East


 After coming off of a tough match on Monday, the Maroons returned to the field as they faced off against Zeeland East. The game started out evenly matched, as neither team was able to get a quality scoring chance. The second half was more sorted out, as both teams had great scoring chances. One key scoring chance was with 24 seconds to go in the game, when Holland Christian took a shot that struck the post, before it was cleared out by the Chix defense. In the end, neither team had a shot make it to the back of the net. Coach DeBoer said after the game “Our defense played well, we gave up a few decent opportunities but for the most part we played well” Holland Christian looks to get their first win of the season as they host Grand Rapids Christian on Tuesday, September 3 at 7:15 PM.

2013 Boys' Varsity Soccer August 26 @ South Christian


 The Maroons traveled to the home of the South Christian Sailors on Monday, on what was a perfect night for soccer. It was a competitive match between the two teams throughout the entirety of the game. It was scoreless until an unfortunate bounce off of a Holland Christian defender put the Sailors on the board first. In the second half, South managed to score another goal off of a beautiful header from the wing. Despite this, Holland Christian fought back to score a goal of their own. Abe Wierda took the ball to end line and sent a ball to the middle, where Bryce Eggers was there to put it away. South added another goal in the final minutes to put them up 3-1. Coach DeBoer said following the game, “We created some decent opportunities and were only able to capitalize on one. Credit South, they took us out of our game with their high pressure. We need to learn how to better play our game against high pressure.” Holland Christian will look to get back on top on Wednesday as they face off against the Chix of Zeeland East. The match will be played in Zeeland at 6:45.

2013 Girls' Tennis State May 31 @ Holland Christian

The Maroons returned to the courts one last time, as they hosted the State Tournament. 24 teams from all over the state were involved in the tournament. Holland Christian finished their season strong, as they finished with 14 points, which put them in 6th place overall. In front of Holland Christian were St. Clair, Forest Hills, Country Day, Allegan, and winning overall was Cranbrook Kingswood of Bloomfield Hills. Terin Everse of 3rd singles finished her season strong as she advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of her flight. Sarah Seabolt finished her Holland Christian tennis career with an outstanding performance, as she also made it to the quarterfinals of her 4thsingles flight. Holland Christian's biggest performance came from Anna Bosgraaf and Lisa Busscher at 4th doubles, as they represented Holland Christian in the semifinals of the 4th doubles flight. Every flight was won by Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, except for the 1st doubles, which was won by Allegan. Finishing their career at Holland Christian are Claire Spoelhof, Sydney Berens, Sarah Seabolt, Emma Geenen, and Elle Memberto.


2013 Girls' Tennis Regionals May 17 @ Allegan


 The Holland Christian Maroons began their postseason on Friday, as they traveled for an all-day tournament at Allegan High School. There were a total of nine schools involved in friday's tournament. Throughout the course of the day, the Maroons were fighting with the home team for first place. Allegan and Holland Christian split the singles flights. After Allegan won the 1st and 2nd singles, Holland Christian fought back to win the 3rd and 4th singles flights. Senior Sarah Seabolt stood out in her performance, as she won her two sets 6-0 and 6-1. The doubles flight was also split evenly between Holland Christian and Allegan. Hope Frieling and Elle Memberto won their 3rd doubles flight, which put Holland Christian only one flight win away from getting 1st place. 4th doubles of Lisa Busscher and Anna Bosgraaf ended up coming through for Holland Christian. In the end, Holland Christian and Allegan tied for 1st place, as they both had 28 points. Coming in third place was Hamilton High School, with 12 points. The Holland Christian Maroons will be heading to the State Tournament over the weekend of May 31-June 1 for the MHSAA division three state tournament, which is being held at Holland Christian and Hope College this year.

2013 Girls' Tennis Match May 14 @ Holland Christian


The Maroons returned to the home courts on Tuesday, as they competed in the last home match of the 2013 season. Competing against Holland Christian was East Grand Rapids. As a whole, the entire team played at the top of their game. All four of the singles played great, as they all ended up beating their opponents. Playing exceptional for the singles were seniors Claire Spoelhof, Sydney Berens, and Sarah Seabolt, as they all finished their matches in two sets. 4th doubles of Anna Bosgraaf and Lisa Busscher won their match in three sets, giving Holland Christian the 5-3 win over East Grand Rapids. Holland Christian's next matches will be played at the Regionals on Friday, May 17. Regionals will be held at Allegan High School.

2013 Girls' Tennis Match May 9 @ South Christian.


It was another sunny day on Thursday, as Holland Christian traveled to Grand Rapids to face South Christian. The Maroons got off to an early lead in the singles, as 2nd singles and 3rd singles both played sensational. 2nd singles Sydney Berens won her sets 6-0, 6-3. Terin Everse at 3rd singles also won her 1st and only set 5-2, due to a medical emergency that her opponent had during the match. Holland Christian also had the upper hand in the doubles. Holland Christian's 1st, 2nd, and 4th doubles all won their matches in two sets. The Maroons ended up winning the match by a final score of 5-3. Holland Christian will be back on the courts on Tuesday, May 14, as they host East Grand Rapids.  

2013 Girls' Tennis Match May 8 @ Holland Christian


Coming off of a great win, the Maroons returned to the courts on Wednesday, as they faced off against Allegan. Holland Christian played great throughout the entirety of the match. Freshman Terin Everse won her match at 3rd singles. Senior Sarah Seabolt also came away with the victory from 4th singles. All of the doubles also gave their all in every match that was played. 4th doubles of Lisa Busscher and Anna Bosgraaf came out victorious in their match. In the end, HC finished with 3 points, and Allegan finished with 5 points. Holland Christian's next match will be at South Christian on Thursday, May 9. 

2013 Girls' Tennis Match May 7 @ Holland Christian


The Maroons returned to the home courts on Monday as they faced off against St. Joseph. Holland Christian's only struggles came in the singles. 1st singles Claire Spoelhof had struggles early, as her match had to go into a third set. Claire won the first set, but fell short in the next two. 3rd singles Terin Everse' match resulted in a third set as well, however Terin was able to capitalize in the 3rd set. Also playing at the top of their game were all four doubles. Emma Geenen and Kari Kroeze swept 1st doubles, as they did not lose a game in either of their sets. 2nd doubles of Rachel Steggerda and Ali Swets had a tough match, as both of their sets went to 7 points. However, both of them were won by the Maroons. The Maroons ended up winning the match by a score of 7-1. The Maroons will be back on the courts on Wednesday, May 8, as they welcome Allegan Schools to the HC Courts.


2013 Girls' Tennis Invitational May 5 @ East Grand Rapids


After winning the Conference Tournament just a day prior, the Maroons traveled to Grand Rapids to participate in the East Grand Rapids Invitational. Three teams were involved in the invitational: Holland Christian, West Ottawa, and East Grand Rapids. Similar to Friday, the Maroons hardly had any points scored on them. Overall, Holland Christian's singles played great. Despite 1st and 2nd Singles losing their flights, 3rd Singles of Terin Everse and 4th Singles of Sarah Seabolt both won their flights. The same story was true for the doubles. After tough losses by the 1st and 2nd doubles, the Maroons got back on their feet to win the 3rd and 4th doubles. 3rd Doubles being Hope Frieling and Elle Memberto. 4th Doubles being Anna Bosgraaf and Lisa Busscher. Holland Christian will return to the courts on Monday as they face St. Joseph at Home at 4:30

2013 Girls' Tennis Conference Tournament May 4 @ Holland


The Maroons returned for another busy day of tennis on Friday, as they traveled to Holland High for the Conference Tournament. Holland Christian headed into the tournament undefeated in their conference. Singles got off to another great start, as Claire Spoelhof (1st), Terin Everse (3rd), and Sarah Seabolt (4th) all won their singles flights. Holland Christian also played at the top of their game in the doubles. Despite the great effort by the Maroons, the only duo that came out on top was 2nd Doubles of Ali Swets and Rachel Steggerda. In the end, Holland Christian came out on top, and was crowned the Conference Champions of 2013. The Maroons will return Home on Monday, May 6, as they face St. Joseph High School.

2013 Girls' Tennis Match May 1 @ Holland Christian


Holland Christian continued their amazing season on Wednesday, as they welcomed Unity Christian to the HC courts. Holland Christian once again came onto the courts with complete control over Unity. All four of the singles won without contest. Senior Sydney Berens, who was moved up to 1st singles for the day, won every single game of both of her sets. Also playing phenomenal was 2nd singles Terin Everse. Terin received her 3rd consecutive match where she won both of her sets 6-0. The doubles also continued their winning streaks, as all four of the doubles won. 1st doubles of Emma Geenen and Kari Kroeze played outstanding, as they only lost two games over the course of their two sets. The Maroons ended up with their 4th 8-0 sweep of the season. The Maroons have a busy weekend ahead of them, with two invites this weekend. The first will be at Holland High all day Friday, and the second will be at East Grand Rapids all day Saturday.  

2013 Girls' Tennis Match April 29 @ Grand Rapids Christian


After coming off of three near-perfect performances, the Maroons looked to continue that winning streak as they traveled to Grand Rapids Christian. Overall, Holland Christian had full command over Grand Rapids Christian over the course of the entire match. After 1st singles Claire Spoelhof suffered a loss, Holland Christian got right back on their feet to win the next three singles match-ups. Playing amazing was freshman Terin Everse (3rd singles), who won both of her sets 6-0. This was Terin's 2nd consecutive game where she won both sets 6-0. The doubles also played valiantly in their matches. The first three doubles all won their match-ups in two sets. The doubles only suffered one loss, as 4th doubles of Lisa Busscher and Anna Bosgraaf fell just short of the win. In the end, the Maroons pulled off the win, as they won 6-2. The Maroons next matchup will be on Wednesday, May 1, as they face the Unity Crusaders.

2013 Girls' Tennis Match April 25 at Holland Christian

The Maroons had another busy day of action, as they had a double header on Thursday. In the first half of the double header, Holland Christian played Hamilton. Singles once again played great as all four of the singles ending up winning their matches. 1st singles Claire Spoelhof lost her first set, but was able to come back to win the next two. 2nd singles Sydney Berens, along with 3rd singles Terin Everse, didn't lose a single game in all of their sets. The doubles also played above average. Holland Christian once again swept the doubles. 1st doubles of Kari Kroeze and Emma Geenen played exceptional, as they won their match in two sets, both of which were won 6-0. The Maroons will travel to Grand Rapids as they face Grand Rapids Christian on Monday, April 29.


2013 Girls' Tennis Match April 24 @ Holland Christian


With the rain in the forecast, the Maroons were able to play their match against Byron Center on Wednesday. As usual, all four of the singles dominated in all of their games. Senior Sydney Berens played outstanding, who only lost one game in her two sets as she won 6-0 and 6-1. The Maroons also played amazing in the doubles. Holland Christian showed no mercy to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd doubles. As all three doubles won. 4th doubles lost the first set, won the second set, and ended up losing the last set, giving Byron Center the point. In the end, the Maroons won 7-1. Holland Christian's next matches will be a double header on Thursday, April 25. The Maroons will be playing Hamilton at 3:45, followed by Zeeland East at 5:00. 

2013 Girls' Tennis Match April 22 @ Holland


          Coming off of the double header on Saturday, the Maroons took on their cross-town rivals, the Holland Dutchmen. The Maroons played phenomenal, as they beat the Dutchmen on Monday. All four of the singles players defeated their opponents in two sets. Playing exceptional for the singles was Sarah Seabolt, as she won both of her sets 6-0. The doubles also played great, as all four of the doubles won all of their matches as well. In the end, the Maroons finished with a perfect score of 8, and the Dutchmen finished with 0. The Maroons next game will take place at Holland Christian as they face the Unity Crusaders, on Tuesday, April 23.  

2013 Girls' Tennis Match April 20 @ Holland Christian


On Saturday afternoon, The Maroons competed against Haslett high school. Holland Christan got off to a rough start in the first couple matches as first and second singles both suffered losses. However, Holland Christian got right back on their feet as Terin Everse and Sarah Seabolt won the third and fourth singles. Holland Christian continued their dominance in the doubles. First and second doubles both got the win. The fourth doubles was the pivotal match for Holland Christian; A win would make them victorious, and a loss would make it a 4-4 tie. Lisa Busscher and Anna Bosgraaf ended up winning the fourth doubles match, sending the Maroons home with the 5-3 win over Haslett. The Maroons will face the Holland Dutchmen (at Holland) on Monday, April 22.  

2013 Girls' Tennis Match April 20 @ Holland Christian


          Early Saturday morning, the Maroons hosted Hudsonville High. The Maroons, coming off of a perfect 8-0 victory, were in search for another victory. Singles played great, as both second and third singles won. Second singles Sydney Berens won two out of the three sets. Third singles Terin Everse also won two out of the three sets. Despite the great effort by the doubles, none of the Holland Christian doubles were able to get a win. Totaling up all of the points, Hudsonville finished with 6 points, and Holland Christian finished with 2 points. The Maroons will be back on the courts on Monday at Holland High at 4:00.  

2013 Girls' Tennis April 15 Match @ Zeeland West


          After coming off of a tough match on Friday, the Maroons took their talents to Zeeland as they faced t the Zeeland West Dux. Holland Christian played spectacular, as they won every single match. Holland Christian finished with the maximum 8 points, and Zeeland West finished with 0. Everybody played great, but playing exceptional were seniors Sarah Seabolt and Sydney Berens as neither of them lost a single set! Also not losing a single set were the doubles of Ali Swets and Rachel Steggerda, and Elle Memberto and Hope Frieling. The Maroons look to continue their dominance of the courts on Wednesday, April 17, as they host the Hamilton Hawkeyes.  

2013 Girls' Tennis April 13 Invite @ Holland Christian


          Coming off to a great start of the season, the Maroons welcomed St. Clair and Forest Hills to the Holland Christian Invite. The Maroons singles got off to a rough start, but they fought back as the 3rd and 4th singles (Terin Everse and Sarah Seabolt) both won in the 3rd set, after falling short in the first two matches. Doubles also did well, as 2nd, 3rd, and 4th doubles all received a win. The Maroons played a great match, but they ended up falling short of the win. Forest Hills ended up with a total of 10 points, St. Clair ended up with 9 points, followed by the Maroons' 5 points. Holland Christian will be back on the courts on Monday, April 15, as they take on the Dux of Zeeland West at 4:00.

2013 Girls' Tennis March 22 Tournament @ West Ottawa


          The Maroons took their talents to the courts on Friday, as they traveled to West Ottawa. Four teams, including Holland Christian, were involved in the invitational. The Maroons played amazing in their first match of the season. They ended up in 1st place overall, finishing with a grand total of 42 points. Following HC was West Ottawa (34), St. Joseph (16), and Holland (13). Holland Christian swept the singles, as Claire Spoelhof, Sydney Berens, Terin Everse, and Sarah Seabolt all won. The Doubles also did exceptional, including a sweep by 3rd doubles, Hope Frieling and Elle Memberto. Coach Knoester said following the match, "We are a young and fairly inexperienced team with 5 freshmen. I am very impressed how well our players played this weekend." The Maroons look to continue their dominant play as they face off against Unity Christian on April 10.
