2015 Baseball June 6 vs. East Grand Rapids (Regional semifinal)

Holland Christian played against the top-ranked East Grand Rapids Pioneers on Saturday afternoon at Hope College. The Maroons scored all three of their runs in the first inning. Mike Mokma drove in two runs with a fly ball to deep left field. Mokma later scored on a suicide squeeze bunt from Josh Sterenberg.

East Grand Rapids scored a run in the first, three in the second, and one in the third.

With today's loss, Holland Christian's season comes to a close. They finished with a 23-9 overall record.

David Williams led the Maroons' offense with a .442 batting average, 46 hits, 15 doubles, a home run, 29 RBI.

Josh Sterenberg batted .416 with 42 hits, 23 RBI, and 20 stolen bases.

The Maroons combined for a .316 average and outscored their opponents 182-108 over the course of the season.

Spencer Slenk was the only senior on the team this year. The Maroons won't be losing quantity, but rather quality as Slenk played in all 32 games as either pitcher, catcher, or outfielder.

2015 Baseball June 1 vs. South Christian (District final)

Holland Christian concluded district play on Monday against South Christian. Josh York led the Maroons on the mound with five innings, three hits, six strikeouts, and one earned run. The Maroons gave York enough run support to give him his sixth win of the season.

Christian Schut scored on a wild pitch to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead after two innings. Mike Mokma's two-RBI double over the left fielder's head extended the lead to 3-0. The Sailors scored a run in the top of the fourth, but the Maroons responded with six of their own: The first on an error, the next on Spencer Slenk's base hit, and the next four on Brady Brower and David Williams' two-RBI hits.

Coby Curtiss finished with two hits and two runs scored. Brower, Mokma, and Williams all had a couple RBIs.

The Maroons will take a 23-8 record into Saturday's regional final at Hope College against East Grand Rapids. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30.

2015 Baseball May 30 vs. Zeeland West (District semifinal)

The Maroons began their postseason on Saturday morning against the Zeeland West Dux. All nine batters stepped in the batter's box in the first inning for four runs. David Williams cleared the bases in the for a three RBI triple. Josh Sterenberg took the next pitch deep enough to score Williams on a sacrifice fly.

They scored four more runs in the second inning. York and Mokma both had RBI base hits, Brewer had a sacrifice fly, and Brower scored on a wild pitch.

The game ended in a 13-2 mercy thanks to a five-run fourth inning for the Maroons.

Brady Brower led the team with three hits, two runs scored, and one RBI. He also made four impressive putouts in the infield.

Josh Sterenberg pitched three innings and earned his fifth win of the season.

Holland Christian will play against South Christian on Monday for the district championship.


2015 Baseball May 23 vs. West Ottawa (Sentinel Tournament final)

The Maroons faced a tougher West Ottawa team for the championship. The Panthers scored nine runs on 13 hits while the Maroons scored one run on four hits. Josh York drove in the run with an RBI double. Josh Sterenberg pitched 6.1 efficient innings but suffered the loss.

2015 Baseball May 23 vs. Holland (Sentinel Tournament semifinal)

Holland Christian played in the semifinal and final games of the Holland Sentinel Tournament on Saturday at Hamilton. They played against Holland in the first game and West Ottawa in the second.

The Maroons sent 12 men to the plate in the second inning and scored seven runs. Riemersma, Brower, Sterenberg, and York all had RBI hits in the inning.

York made the score 8-0 in the fourth inning after he drove in his second run of the day on a ground ball.

The Dutch scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning but Holland Christian came back to get five runs in the bottom of the inning. Mike Mokma drove in two with a base hit up the middle before he crossed the plate himself. Slenk drove in the Maroons' thirteenth run of the game with his game-high third hit.

Sam Wierda hit an RBI line drive single to left field to end the game after six innings due to the mercy rule.

Josh Sterenberg, Josh York, and Mike Mokma all had two hits and two RBIs.


2015 Baseball May 22 @ Saugatuck (Sentinel Tournament)

Holland Christian played at Saugatuck for the first game of the Sentinel Classic Tournament. The Maroons sent every batter to the plate in the third inning for five runs.

In the sixth inning, Brady Brower drove in Spencer Slenk for his second RBI single of the day. Later that inning, Josh Sterenberg drove in Brower for his second RBI single of the day. Josh York capped the inning off with a bases-clearing 3-RBI double to deep center.

Riemersma, Brower, Williams, Sterenberg, and Slenk all had two hits.

Along with his 3-RBI double, Josh York didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and finished with six innings pitched, one hit, 10 strikeouts, and zero earned runs.

Holland Christian will play the remainder of the tournament at Hamilton tomorrow. The first game will be against Holland. The other game is West Ottawa vs. Zeeland East. The winners will play for the championship and the losers will play for third place.

2015 Baseball May 19 vs. Coopersville

Holland Christian hosted Coopersville on Thursday for its last home game of the regular season. Before the game, Spencer Slenk was honored as the only senior of the team. Spencer has shown his leadership on the team both on and off the field.

Thomas Leuschner got the Maroons on the board with an RBI double in the second inning. Mike Mokma drove in the second run with a base hit up the middle.

Holland Christian was down 5-2 after four innings.

Mike Mokma had his second RBI single of the day in the fifth inning. In the next at bat, David Williams found the left side of the infield and drove in another run. After a sacrifice fly and a sacrifice suicide squeeze bunt, the Maroons found themselves on top 6-5 after five.

David Williams drove in a few insurance runs in the sixth inning with a two-RBI double to the right-center gap.

Holland Christian had 14 hits while Coopersville only had four. Williams and Riemersma had three hits apiece. Thomas Leuschner also had a great day with a couple base hits. Josh Sterenberg pitched the final 3.1 innings, gave up zero hits, and earned the win.

Holland Christian will participate in the Sentinel Tournament this weekend. The first game is at Saugatuck and Saturday's games depend on the result of Friday's game.


2015 Baseball May 19 @ Lowell

Holland Christian traveled to Lowell on Monday for another non-conference game. The Maroons gave up seven runs in the third inning, none of which were earned. David Williams sparked the offense with a home run in the fourth inning. Riemersma added the third run with a deep sacrifice fly. Holland Christian hit four base hits in the seventh inning, two of which were RBI singles.

David Williams had his 10th-multi-hit game of the year as he went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and a couple base hits.

Holland Christian will play at Saugatuck for the opening round of the Sentinel Baseball Classic. 

2015 Baseball May 16 @ Allendale Tournament

Holland Christian participated in the Allendale Tournament on Saturday. Josh York tied the game up at 1-1 when he drove in Josh Sterenberg on an RBI single to left field. York tied the game up at 2-2 in the third inning when he drove in Mike Mokma on a hard hit ball to the third baseman. York broke the tie with an RBI double in the fifth inning. The Maroons' four-run fifth inning propelled them to a 6-2 victory.

York finished 3-for-3 with three RBI at the plate and pitched all seven innings, struck out six, and only gave up one earned run on the mound.

Spencer Brewer also had a good game for the Maroons as he had three hits and an RBI


Holland Christian played against Montague in the second game of the tournament. The Maroons got on the board in the second inning when Josh Sterenberg came home thanks to a fielding error. Sterenberg also scored the second run when Brandon Dykgraaf reached on an infield base hit in the fourth inning. Brandon Riemersma followed with a two-RBI single. Montague responded with two runs to make it a 4-3 game after four innings. Mike Mokma broke open the game by driving in Brady Brower and himself by hitting the first home run of the year over the left field fence. Sterenberg added the Maroons' seventh and his third run of the game in the fifth inning on a fielding error. The game ended 7-5 in favor of HC.

Josh Sterenberg had three hits, stole four bases, and scored three runs. Brandon Riemersma had two hits and two RBIs.

David Williams earned the win on the mound by pitching five innings and striking out five. Spencer Brewer was credited with the save.

2015 Baseball May 14 vs. Zeeland West

The Maroons hosted the Dux on Friday after splitting Tuesday's doubleheader. David Williams began the game's scoring by hitting a bases-loaded RBI single to right field. The Maroons sent eleven men to the plate and scored six runs in the first inning.

Zeeland scored its only run in the fourth inning.

Holland Christian scored its final two runs on a bases-loaded walk from Coby Curtiss and a sacrifice fly from Mike Mokma.

Riemersma led the team with two hits and a stolen base.

Mike Mokma pitched three innings, struck out five, and earned the win. Spencer Slenk relieved him for the final four innings.

Holland Christian finishes OK Green conference play with a 9-6 record.

The Maroons will take a 7-0 non-conference record into Saturday's tournament at Allendale.  


2015 Baseball May 12 @ Zeeland West

Holland Christian played against Zeeland West on Tuesday in their final conference doubleheader of the season. The game was tied 2-2 after four innings. Mike Mokma scored off a sacrifice bunt by Josh Sterenberg to break the tie in the fifth inning. They added two more runs off wild pitches to take a 5-2 lead after five innings. The Dux scored a run in the sixth but couldn't overcome the deficit.

Josh York pitched all seven innings on only 69 pitches for the win.
Josh Sterenberg and Brady Brower both had two hits. Sterenberg also had an RBI and scored twice.


Brady Brower got the Maroons on the board in game two with a first inning sacrifice fly. Holland Christian had its first two batters of the fourth inning on base after David Williams hit a deep double and Josh Sterenberg reached on a fielding error. Both runners scored after Brandon Dykgraaf laid down a sacrifice bunt. The Dux rallied back in their half of that inning for five runs to make the score 7-3 after four innings. Mike Mokma drove in Spencer Slenk with an RBI single in the fifth inning. Brandon Riemersma had an RBI single in the next inning when Brady Brower scored from second base. Slenk scored again later in the sixth inning off a defensive indifference/steal of home.

Both teams had ten hits in the second game.
Brandon Riemersma went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Mike Mokma and David Williams both had two hits.
Holland Christian will take an 15-6 record into Thursday's conference finale vs. Zeeland West.

2015 Girls Soccer June 5 @ Richland Gull Lake

After defeating the third best team in the state on Tuesday, the 

Maroons returned to Vicksburg to play against Gull Lake, the 


second best team, for the Regional Championship. Holland 


Christian got on the board twenty minutes into the game when 


Kristen Marsman blasted the ball through a crowd and into the 


back of the net. Gull Lake responded with a goal a few minutes 


later, sending the teams into halftime with a 1-1 tie. 



The first 15 minutes of the second half were rather evenly 

matched. Both teams had a few chances but neither capitalized. 


Gull Lake scored four goals in the final 25 minutes.



Holland Christian's season comes to a close with a 13-6-3 overall 

record, including a district championship. The Maroons will 


graduate nine seniors: Kristen Mulder, Rebekah Maguire, Laura 


VanPutten, Cici Nienhuis, Kristen Marsman, Taylor Genzink, 


Libby VanderLee, Abby Field, and Lydia Wiersema. 

2015 Girls Soccer June 2 @ Stevensville Lakeshore

Holland Christian played against Lakeshore in the Regional 

Semifinal on Tuesday night in a very close match. The 

Maroons began just how they ended districts--by attacking 

the net. They battled for multiple chances, but only found the

 back of the net once. Alexi Zastrow's throw in found Sadie 

VanderLee, who found the back of the net. That would prove

 to be all they would need. Well, all they would need 

offensively.


Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Dykema came up with ten 


saves to complete the shutout. In the last ten minutes, she 

punched a ball over the crossbar and blocked a breakaway 

attempt.


Holland Christian will face Gull Lake for the Regional 


Championship on Friday night at 6:00 at Vicksburg High 

School.

2015 Girls Soccer May 30 vs. Zeeland East

The Maroons and the Chix kicked off on Saturday afternoon 

for the district championship. Holland Christian came out in 

full force, scoring two goals in the first six minutes of play. 

The first goal was scored by senior Becka Maguire and the 

second was by sophomore Rylea Grassmid. The Chix took 

momentum into the second half with a late first-half goal.


Holland Christian quickly shot down that momentum with two 

more goals in the second half, both by Maguire. Becka's 

second goal of the day came off the rebound of Kristen 

Marsman's free kick and her third came from Alexi Zastrow's 

corner kick.


The Maroons will take a 12-5-3 record into Tuesday's 

regional semifinal against Stevensville-Lakeshore at 

Vicksburg. 

2015 Girls Soccer May 28 vs. Grand Rapids Christian

When the teams met four weeks ago on the Eagles' grass 

field, the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The rivals got a rematch 

on Thursday in a win-or-go-home District Semifinal. The 

Maroons got on the board ten minutes into the game when 

Libby VanderLee smashed a rebound into the back of the 

net. In Tuesday's District Quarterfinal against Byron Center, 

Abby Koops had four goals and Alexi Zastrow had four 

assists. Both displayed their respective strengths again with 

41 seconds remaining in the first half as Alexi crossed it to 

Koops who was there to head it into the net. Both teams 

played well in the second half but neither team scored.


Zeeland East defeated Zeeland West 4-1 in the other 

semifinal to earn a trip to the finals against the Maroons on 

Saturday at 1:00. In the bone-chilling game on March 26, the 

Chix earned a 1-0 victory over the Maroons. 

2015 Girls Soccer May 26 vs. Byron Center

The Maroons hosted their conference rivals from Byron 

Center on Tuesday evening in the District Quarterfinals. 

Holland Christian won both of the regular season matches by

a score of 7-0. The third match wasn't much different. The 

Maroons finished on top 6-0 thanks to a great performance 

by sophomore Abby Koops, who tallied four of the goals. 

Alexi Zastrow finished with one goal and four assists. Becka

Maguire also had a goal.




The Maroons will take a 10-5-3 overall record into 

Thursday's semifinal game against Grand Rapids Christian. 

In the regular season, the Maroons and the Eagles tied 1-1 

but Grand Rapids Christian has since been ranked 

honorable mention in Division 2 by the MHSAA. 

2015 Girls Soccer May 18 vs. Zeeland West

Holland Christian hosted Zeeland West on Monday evening 

for the final conference match of the season. Nine seniors 

were honored before the game: Kristen Mulder, Becka 

Maguire, Laura VanPutten, Cici Nienhuis, Kristen Marsman, 

Taylor Genzink, Libby VanderLee, Abby Field, and Lydia 

Wiersema.


Maguire gave the Maroons a 1-0 lead only five minutes into 

the game. Abby Koops scored the second goal by heading 

in a corner kick from Alexi Zastrow. Mikaela VanHuis tapped

one in the back of the net for the Maroons' third and final 

goal of the half. Zeeland West added their only goal with 

three minutes remaining in the first half.


Libby VanderLee kicked off the second half with an early 

goal. Alexi Zastrow added the fifth goal of the day by 

bending a corner kick into the back of the net. Seniors Becka 

Maguire and Libby VanderLee each added their second goal 

of the game in the last ten minutes of regulation.


Holland Christian improves to 9-5-2 overall and finishes with 

a 7-3 record in the OK Green. 

2015 Girls Soccer May 15 vs. South Christian

Holland Christian hosted South Christian on Friday in an 

early afternoon non-conference matchup. Libby VanderLee 

scored the lone goal of the first half off a feed from her 

sister, Sadie.

Becka Maguire scored both goals in the second half as the 

Maroons closed out the game on top 3-0. The Maroons will 

host the Dux on Monday for senior night.

2015 Girls Soccer May 11 vs. Byron Center

The Maroons played a conference game against Byron Center on 

Monday. They won the game 7-0, the same score as last meeting. 

Holland Christian rallied for five goals in the first half and added 

two in the second.


Becka Maguire led the team with four goals. Sadie VanderLee, 

Kristen Marsman, and Abby Koops all added one.

The Maroons will take a 7-4-2 overall; 6-2 conference record into 

Wednesday's huge rivalry game at Unity Christian.
