2014 Lacrosse May 27 vs. Okemos

Holland Christian played their final game of the year on Tuesday, as they played against Okemos, the sixth best team in the state. The Maroons found themselves down 9-2 at halftime. Both goals were scored by Jake Kalkman.
Kalkman also scored a goal in the third quarter. Allyn Anthony and Jon Nykamp also scored, but Okemos extended their lead to 15-5 after three quarters of play. Holland Christian outscored Okemos 4-2 in the fourth quarter, but ended up falling short by a score of 17-9. Jon Nykamp led the fourth quarter scoring with two goals. Justin Dykgraaf and Micah Bieri also found the back of the net.
Jake Kalkman and Jon Nykamp each totaled three goals. Allyn Anthony, Micah Bieri, and Justin Dykgraaf each had one.
Six seniors played their final game in a maroon uniform: Justin Dykgraaf, Jon Nykamp, Ty Steggerda, Nick Genzink, and Isaac Boes.

 Joe Spoelhof led the Maroons with 47 goals on the season, followed by Jon Nykamp with 41 and Jake Kalkman with 35. Holland Christian finished with a 14-5 record.

2014 Baseball May 24 vs. Fennville

The second game against Fennville was better for the Maroons both offensively and defensively. Josiah Coleman started scoring with a 2 RBI bloop single over the first baseman's head. Coleman went on to add the third run by scoring off of a wild pitch. Casey Meyaard continued the scoring by hitting an RBI single. After Meyaard stole second and third, he scored off Nick Hill's groundout. Mike Mokma drilled a ball to the left field fence that sent Nate DeZwaan all the way around to home plate. Two plays later, David Williams nailed a ball over the left field fence for his first high school home run. After two innings, Holland Christian was leading 8-0. In the fourth inning, David Williams made the score 10-0 by hitting his second home run of the game. After the top of the fifth inning, the game was called due to the mercy rule.
David Williams finished 3 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs. Casey Meyaard also had a great game, as he went 2 for 2 with a single, a triple, and an RBI.
Josh York led the Maroons defensively by pitching all five innings, striking out 7 and walking 1. York also did not allow any hits, leading the Maroons to their second no-hitter of the season.

 After today's games, the Maroons record becomes 18-8. Holland Christian will travel to Hamilton on Saturday, May 31, as they play in the district tournament.  

2014 Baseball May 24, 2014 @ Zeeland East

Holland Christian played against Zeeland East in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Holland Christian hit the ball hard a lot, but they failed to collect enough hits to score a run. Zeeland East's big 4 run fourth inning earned them the 7-0 victory on the day. Nate DeZwaan and Landon Brower each had a hit. Brower also pitched five innings, struck out six, and only gave up one earned run. Nick Hill came in and pitched the final inning.
In other action, Holland beat Fennville. Because Holland Christian and Fennville both lost, they played each other in Game 2.

2014 Lacrosse May 22 vs. Grand Rapids Catholic Central

Holland Christian hosted Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Thursday night in the first round of the tournament. Jon Nykamp, Jake Kalkman, and Joe Spoelhof all scored in the first quarter, and the Maroons took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. Allyn Anthony led the Maroons with two goals in the second quarter to give them an 8-3 lead at halftime.
Justin Dykgraaf scored two of the Maroons' three goals in the third quarter. After three quarters of play, Holland Christian led 11-8. Jon Nykamp finished the game by scoring two goals in the final quarter. In the end, the Maroons came out on top 16-10.
Jon Nykamp and Allyn Anthony each scored four goals on seven shots. Justin Dykgraaf scored three. Brad Houskamp kept the Maroons in the game by stopping 21 shots at goalie.

 Holland Christian's overall record improves to 14-4 on the season. Holland Christian's next game will be held at Grand rapids Christian on Tuesday, May 27, and will be played against Okemos. 

2014 Baseball May 23 @ West Ottawa

Holland Christian took on the West Ottawa Panthers on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Holland-Area Tournament. West Ottawa got on the board first by scoring two runs in the first inning off of a few Holland Christian errors. West Ottawa added their third run of the game off of a home run in the second inning, followed by an RBI single to go up 4-0 heading into the fourth inning. Holland Christian responded with four unanswered runs. David Williams drove in the first run by hitting a double to the fence in centerfield in the fourth inning. The other three runs came in the top of the seventh, all three of which with two outs. Nick Hill scored Josh Sterenberg off of a swinging bunt that resulted in a West Ottawa throwing error. Nate DeZwaan drove in the final two runs by drilling a ball to the centerfield fence, making the score 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. West Ottawa, however, filled the bases and ended up winning off of a walkoff single.
Mike Mokma pitched 4.1 innings, struck out 7, and earned the no decision. Nate DeZwaan pitched the rest of the game. Offensively, DeZwaan led the team with two hits and two RBIs.

 Holland Christian's overall record becomes 17-7 after the 5-4 loss to West Ottawa, and they will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 24, at Zeeland East.  

2014 Baseball May 22 @ Coopersville

It was another great day for baseball on Thursday, as Holland Christian took on Coopersville. The score was tied 0-0 until the sixth inning, where the Maroons managed to score the game's three runs. With the bases loaded, Casey Meyaard walked in the first run of the game. Two more runs scored on the next play when Nick Hill drew a throwing error. The game ended 3-0 in favor of the Maroons.
Josh Sterenberg pitched 5.1 innings and earned the Win, while Nate DeZwaan pitched for 1.2 innings. Altogether, Holland Christian outhit Coopersville 7-4. Three of those HC hits came from David Williams, who finished 3 for 4. After today's victory, Holland Christian improves to 17-6 on the season; 11-1 in their past 12 games.

 Starting on Friday, May 23, there will be a Holland-Area tournament. Eight teams will take place in this tournament: Holland, Zeeland East, Zeeland West, West Ottawa, Fennville, Saugatuck, Hamilton, and Holland Christian. Holland Christian's first game will be at West Ottawa on Friday. . Holland Christian's baseball field will host the winners' side of the bracket, and Zeeland East will host the losers' side of the bracket. The Maroons will play a doubleheader at their respective location depending on the outcome of the game against West Ottawa.

2014 Lacrosse May 17 vs. Oxford

Holland Christian hosted Oxford on Saturday night in their last regular season game. It was also senior night for seven Maroons: Justin Dykgraaf, Caleb VanderLugt, Nick Genzink, Ray Guo, Jon Nykamp, Isaac Boes, and Ty Steggerda.
Jon Nykamp scored two goals in the first quarter, and Joe Spoelhof scored one.
In the second quarter, Jake Kalkman, and Jon Nykamp all found the back of the net; Joe Spoelhof found the back of the net twice. Holland Christian led 8-2.
Luke Harbottle, Joe Spoelhof, and Justin Dykgraaf all scored in the third quarter, along with Jake Kalkman scoring two. Holland Christian was outscored 2-0 in the final quarter, but still finished with the confident 13-5 victory.

 Holland Christian will participate in the Regional quarterfinal on Thursday, May 22, on the HC Turf. 

2014 Baseball May 17 Doubleheader vs. Spring Lake

The Maroons played their final regular season doubleheader on Saturday as they hosted Spring Lake. With two runners in scoring position, Landon Brower hit a 2 RBI single to centerfield. Brower later scored off of a Josh Sterenberg single. Holland Christian led 3-0 until the fourth inning, when they added three more runs. Nick Hill doubled in a run. Nate DeZwaan hit a suicide squeeze bunt that scored Casey Meyaard from third base. Mokma brought the fourth inning scoring to a close hitting an RBI single, making it 6-0 after the fourth inning.
Nate DeZwaan drilled a ball to the fence that he stretched into a triple. Mokma drove in the seventh and final run of the game by hitting a sacrifice fly that scored DeZwaan. Holland Christian won the first game by a score of 7-1
Mike Mokma and Landon Brower led the Maroons offensively as each of them drove in two runs. Mokma also led the Maroons on the mound, as he threw six scoreless innings, struck out six batters and only gave up three hits. Freshman pitcher Spencer Brewer came in to pitch the final inning. In that inning, he struck out two batters.
In the bottom of the first inning of Game 2, Mike Mokma and Landon Brower hit back-to-back sacrifice hits. Each team scored two runs in the second inning. The Maroons' runs came from Nate DeZwaan's 2 RBI single. After two innings, Holland Christian led 4-2. In the fourth inning, Nate DeZwaan hustled all the way in from first base as Mike Mokma drilled a triple to the fence. The Maroons scored five runs in the fifth inning. Max Wierda drilled in the first run by hitting an RBI double down the left field line. Nate DeZwaan drove in two more runs with his second 2 RBI single of the game. Mike Mokma wrapped up the scoring by drilling his second triple of the game, scoring two more runs in the process. In the end, Holland Christian came out on top 10-5.
Mike Mokma and Josh Sterenberg each had three hits. Nate DeZwaan and Mike Mokma each had 4 RBIs. Nick Hill and Nate DeZwaan each scored three runs.

 Nick Hill pitched 5 innings, and Nate DeZwaan pitched the other 2. Both pitchers had three strikeouts. Holland Christian's record improves to 16-6 after today's sweep of Spring Lake.

2014 Baseball May 16 vs. Unity Christian

Holland Christian split a doubleheader at Unity Christian on Tuesday. On Friday, the Maroons hosted Unity in the final conference game of the season. David Williams got the Maroons on the board in the first inning with a 2 RBI triple to the right field fence. Williams earned his third RBI of the game when he hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Nate DeZwaan from third base. Josh Sterenberg followed by singling in fellow sophomore Mike Mokma, making the score 4-0 after three innings.
In the fourth inning, Nick Hill hit a short fly ball to right field that popped out of the rightfielder's glove. Because of this, Josiah Coleman was able to cruise all the way to home plate, making the score 5-0. In the top of the fifth inning, however, Unity tied the game up at 5-5.
That tie was broken when Mike Mokma hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Max Wierda. Landon Brower came in with a clutch pinch-hit RBI single that gave the Maroons an insurance run. Holland Christian had the 7-5 advantage going into the final inning. Unity threatened to tie the game up in the seventh inning by putting two men on with nobody out. Holland Christian was able to hold the lead, however, thanks to a fly out and a game ending double play. In the end, Holland Christian defeated Unity Christian by a score of 7-5.
Josiah Coleman, Mike Mokma, and Nate DeZwaan all had two hits. David Williams led the team with three RBIs.
Josh York pitched 4.2 solid innings and earned the no decision. Nick Hill pitched the final 2.1 innings and earned the Win. Each pitcher struck out two batters.

 With today's win, Holland Christian's record improves to 14-6 with three games to play in the regular season. They will host a doubleheader against Spring Lake on Saturday, and will travel to Coopersville on Thursday.

2014 Baseball May 14 vs. Wayland Union

Holland Christian played a non-conference game against Wayland Union on Wednesday. The Maroons struck first in the second inning, as Josh Sterenberg scored on a passed ball. Nate DeZwaan began the third inning with a double. On the next play, Landon Brower hit a bloop single to right field that scored DeZwaan. Holland Christian scored their third run of the game when Casey Meyaard came home on a wild pitch. Mike Mokma made the score 5-0 in the fourth inning when he hit a double to the fence that scored Brandt VanHeest and Nick Hill.
In the fifth inning, Brandt VanHeest hit a fielder's choice with the bases loaded that caused a run to score. On the next play, Josh York advanced from third to home on a throwing error by the catcher. With Brandt VanHeest in scoring position, Nick Hill doubled to deep center, and Brandt VanHeest scored. Nick Hill later rounded the bases off of a series of errors. After five innings, the Maroons were up 9-0. The game was not over yet, however, as Wayland rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning. With the score 9-6 with two outs and a man on second, Nate DeZwaan came in to relieve Josh Sterenberg, the starter. DeZwaan threw only one pitch, but that one pitch would be enough to get them out of the inning, and enough to earn him the save.

 Josh Sterenberg pitched 6.2 innings and struck out six batters. Nick Hill, Casey Meyaard, and Nate DeZwaan all had two hits. Holland Christian's record improves to 13-6 on the season. Holland Christian will play their final conference game of the season on Thursday, May 15, against Unity Christian.  

2014 Lacrosse May 13 vs. Grand Rapids Catholic Central

Holland Christian hosted Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Tuesday for the Conference Championship. Jon Nykamp and Justin Dykgraaf both scored in the first quarter. Holland Christian's defense held Catholic Central scoreless, giving Holland Christian the 2-0 advantage after the first quarter. Joe Spoelhof opened the scoring in the second quarter by netting back-to-back goals. Jake Kalkman and Jon Nykamp each added a goal, and the Maroons took a 6-1 lead after the first half.
Jon Nykamp scored two goals in the third quarter. Juniors Joe Spoelhof and Allyn Anthony had a goal apiece. Holland Christian led 10-4 after three quarters. Jake Kalkman scored the only goal for the Maroons in the fourth quarter. Grand Rapids Catholic Central responded with two goals of their own, but was unable to overcome the deficit. Holland Christian finished with the 11-6 victory, along with the conference championship.

 Holland Christian will host Oxford High School on Saturday, May 17, at 6:00. 

2014 Lacrosse May 8 vs. Caledonia

Holland Christian hosted Caledonia on Thursday in round two of the conference tournament. Jon Nykamp and Jake Kalkman both scored in the first quarter, but Caledonia scored three. Holland Christian came back, however, and took a 6-5 lead into halftime thanks to goals from Luke Harbottle, Justin Dykgraaf, and a pair from Jon Nykamp.
The Maroons outscored Caledonia 6-1 in the third quarter, making the score 12-6 heading into the final quarter. Holland Christian only scored two goals in the fourth quarter, but the Holland Christian defense held Caledonia scoreless, and the game ended 14-6.
Jon Nykamp led the Maroons with four goals and three assists. Jake Kalkman scored three goals, and Justin Dykgraaf and Luke Harbottle each scored two. Brad Houskamp had a solid performance in goal, making nine saves.
Holland Christian will play again on Tuesday night here at the Holland Christian turf for the championship.


2014 Baseball May 13 Doubleheader @ Unity

Holland Christian traveled to Hudsonville on Tuesday to take on their conference rivals from Unity Christian. Nick Hill and Mike Mokma both had RBI singles in the first inning. Later in that inning, Josh Sterenberg grounded out to third base, but Mike Mokma scored in the process. The score remained 3-0 until Unity scored a run in the bottom of the second.
In the fourth inning, Max Wierda singled in Dan Lynch. Max Wierda later scored off of a single by Nick Hill. With the bases loaded, David Williams tripled to deep right field. On the next play, Josh Sterenberg hit a single, scoring Williams for the sixth run of the inning. Holland Christian led 9-2 after four innings.
The Maroons continued the scoring in the next inning. Nate DeZwaan hit an RBI double to deep centerfield, then Mokma hit a double to deep centerfield, scoring DeZwaan. Holland Christian added two more runs later in the inning to make it a 13-2 game heading into the bottom of the fifth. Unity Christian added a run, but failed to come back, and the game ended 13-3.
Mike Mokma pitched all five innings for the Maroons, and struck out nine. Offensively, Josh Sterenberg, Nate DeZwaan, and Landon Brower both went 3 for 4. Mike Mokma, Nick Hill, and Max Wierda all added two hits. Holland Christian combined for a grand total of 16 hits.


 The Maroons got on the board early in Game 2 off of a fielder's choice. Unity responded with two runs in their half of the inning. In the third inning, Landon Brower scored Nick Hill off of a sacrifice fly to tie the game up at 2-2 after three innings. In the top of the fifth, Mike Mokma scored on a fielder's choice. Josiah Coleman added an insurance run by scoring Josh Sterenberg on an infield single. Unity Christian added three runs in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 5-4 in favor of Unity. After five innings, the game was called for being “too dark”. Unfortunately, the game ended in that score, and the Maroons and the Crusaders split the doubleheader. Holland Christian's overall record is now 12-6.

2014 Baseball May 8 vs. Byron Center

After sweeping the doubleheader on Tuesday, Holland Christian hosted Byron Center for the third game of the week. Byron Center jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Holland Christian countered with 12 runs in the bottom half. In that inning, Holland Christian batted around the lineup two times. Nick Hill scored their first run off of an error. David Williams tripled to deep centerfield, driving in two more. Sterenberg followed by driving the run in with an RBI single. With the bases loaded, Max Wierda grounded to shortstop, but the ball was bobbled and everyone was safe, including the runner at the plate. Nick Hill then reached on a fielder's choice, and another run scored. Later, Mike Mokma was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded.
David Williams earned his fifth RBI of the game when he doubled in Brandt VanHeest in the second inning. Casey Meyaard followed with an RBI single. The second inning came to a close with the Maroons up by a score of 14-1.
Byron Center scored the four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth. Holland Christian scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth when Josiah Coleman cleared the bases with a 3 RBI double. The score was 17-8 going into the bottom of the fifth. Brandt VanHeest ended up coming home off of a fielding error, and the game ended 18-8 by mercy rule.
 David Williams had a great day offensively as he went 3 for 3 with five RBIs by hitting a single, a double, and a triple. Altogether, Holland Christian finished with 14 hits. Holland Christian's record improves to 11-5 on the season, and are currently on a five game win streak. The Maroons will be back in action on Tuesday, May 13, as they travel to Unity Christian for a doubleheader

2014 Baseball May 6 Doubleheader @ Byron Center

Holland Christian traveled to Byron Center on Tuesday to play the first two games of a three game series. Max Wierda drove in the first run of Game 1 by singling in Josh York in the second inning. In the fifth inning, Josh Sterenberg scored Brandon Roon off of a single, and then Landon Brower scored on the same play because of a fielding error. Brandon Roon gave the Maroons an insurance run in the seventh inning by scoring on a passed ball. Byron Center scored a run in the last inning, but the Maroons earned the 4-2 victory in Game 1.
Mike Mokma and Landon Brower each had two base hits. Mike Mokma also led the way on the mound, pitching all seven innings, and striking out 10 batters.


Holland Christian started off Game 2 with three runs in the first inning. Nick Hill scored the first run off of an error. Mike Mokma crossed home plate after Brandon Roon walked with the bases loaded. Josh Sterenberg scored the third run off of a passed ball. Byron Center scored five runs over the course of the next few innings, and held Holland Christian scoreless until the top of the fifth. In the fifth inning, however, the Maroons scored four more runs. Mike Mokma doubled to the fence, driving in Nate DeZwaan. Mike Mokma later scored because of Landon Brower grounding out. Josiah Coleman continued the scoring by hitting an RBI single. Spencer Slenk singled up the middle, sending Josiah to the plate. Holland Christian led 7-5 after five innings.
Byron Center threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh inning, but was held scoreless due to some great defensive plays. With men on first and third with nobody out, Brandon Roon caught a fly ball, and then through out the runner who tried to advance to home. Byron Center then scored a run, making it a 7-6 ball game. The game ended with Nick Hill making a diving catch in centerfield, and the game ended with that same score.
Nick Hill pitched four solid innings, and finished with the Win. Landon Brower came in for the final three and was credited with the save.

 Holland Christian's overall record improves to 10-5, and will host Byron Center on Thursday.  

2014 Lacrosse May 6 vs. Spring Lake

Holland Christian hosted Spring Lake on Tuesday for the first game of the conference tournament. Goals from Justin Dykgraaf, Jake Kalkman, and Joe Spoelhof gave the Maroons a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. Joe Spoelhof scored both goals for Holland Christian in the second quarter, and the Maroons took a 5-1 lead into halftime

 Justin Dykgraaf made the score 6-1 by scoring the lone goal of the third quarter. Each team scored a goal in the fourth quarter an Holland Christian took home the 7-2 victory. The Maroons' next round of this tournament will be on Thursday and will play against Caledonia.

2014 Lacrosse May 3 @ Clarkston


In his high school days, Steven Johns played goalie at Clarkston. Today, Clarkston is ranked #4 in the state of Michigan. On Saturday, Steven Johns led his Maroons to the east side of the state to take on Clarkston, who is led by the same coach that Johns had when he played there.
Holland Christian was able to keep up with Clarkston for the majority of the first half. After the first quarter, Holland Christian was down 5-3. The Maroons added three more goals in the second quarter, making the halftime score 9-6 in favor of Clarkston.
In the second half, the lead got out of the reach of the Maroons. Holland Christian scored two goals in the half, but Clarkston scored 12, making the final score 21-8. Jake Kalkman scored four of the Holland Christian goals, while Jon Nykamp scored three. Justin Dykgraaf added the other goal.

 Holland Christian will host the conference tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 6.

2014 Lacrosse May 1 vs. Caledonia

Holland Christian welcomed Caledonia to the turf on Thursday night. Justin Dykgraaf, Isaac Nelson, and Jake Kalkman all scored for the Maroons in the opening quarter, giving them a 3-0 lead.
Luke Harbottle, Allyn Anthony, Jake Kalkman, and Jon Nykamp all found the back of the net in the second quarter for the Maroons.
Justin Dykgraaf and Joe Spoelhof each scored two goals in the third quarter. The Holland Christian defense, led by goalie Brad Houskamp, held Caledonia scoreless through three quarters.
Holland Christian was outscored 4-0 in the fourth quarter, but ended up taking home the secure 11-4 victory.
Justin Dykgraaf led the Maroons with three goals. Jon Nykamp also had an amazing game, as he scored a goal and assisted five more.

 Holland Christian's next game will be held on the east side of the state at Clarkston High School on Saturday, May 3. 

2014 Baseball May 1 @ Holland

On Wednesday, Holland Christian split a doubleheader with the Holland Dutch. On Thursday, the Maroons faced against the Dutch for a third time. In the first inning, David Williams hit a triple to deep centerfield that scored Brandon Roon from second base. In the next inning, Nick Hill cleared the bases with a 2 RBI triple to deep centerfield as well. The Maroons added two runs in the third inning. One run scored off of a Dan Lynch sacrifice fly, the other scored when Josh York grounded out and the run came in from third. Holland Christian was winning 5-1 after three innings. In the fourth inning, Mike Mokma crushed a ball 330 feet to left field, soaring over the fence for a two run home run. Due to the wet conditions, the game ended after five innings. Holland Christian finished the game on top 7-1.
Mike Mokma and Nick Hill each finished with 2 RBIs. Mokma also earned himself the victory on the mound today, striking out five batters in four solid innings.

 Holland Christian will travel to Cedar Springs on Saturday for a doubleheader.
