2014 Baseball April 30 Doubleheader vs. Holland

Because of the inclement weather on Tuesday, the doubleheader against Holland was postponed to Wednesday. The score was 4-0 in favor of the Dutch after three innings. In the fourth inning, Mike Mokma came home from third base on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Josh Sterenberg hit a double to the left field fence, scoring Mike Mokma again from third. Later that inning, Sterenberg scored on a passed ball, cutting the Dutch lead to 5-3. Holland Christian threatened to score in the seventh inning, but ended up falling just short, and the score was 5-3.
Mike Mokma finished with two of the Maroons' five hits, and scored two of the three runs.

Holland Christian put up four runs in the first inning of Game 2. Josh Sterenberg hit a 2 RBI single down the third base line. On the very next play, Josiah Coleman cleared the bases with a deep 2 RBI double, making the score 4-0 Holland Christian after the first inning. David Williams and Josh Sterenberg resumed the scoring in the third inning by hitting back-to-back sacrifice flies, scoring two more runs for the Maroons. In the fourth inning, Nate DeZwaan grounded out, but Max Wierda came in from third base to make it 7-0. On the next play, Landon Brower hit a sacrifice fly that scored Nick Hill. The Dutch were able to come up with three runs in the final three innings, but the Maroons came out on top 8-3.

 Nick Hill earned the Win for the Maroons after six strong innings on the mound. Josh Sterenberg went 1-2 and finished with 3 RBIs. Josiah Coleman went 2-3 and had 2 RBIs.

2014 Lacrosse April 29 vs. Spring Lake

The Spring Lake Lakers traveled to the Holland Christian turf on Tuesday night. The Maroons led 4-2 after the first quarter. Jon Nykamp scored three goals and Joe Spoelhof scored the other. Each team scored two goals in the second quarter, making the halftime score 6-4. Joe Spoelhof and Jake Kalkman each scored a goal in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Joe Spoelhof added his third goal of the game, and Jon Nykamp added his fourth. Holland Christian led 8-5 after three quarters of play. Justin Dykgraaf scored back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter, both goals were assisted by Joe Spoelhof. Spring Lake answered with back-to-back goals of their own, but a late goal by Luke Harbottle sealed the 11-7 victory for the Maroons.

 Holland Christian's record improves to 8-2 after tonight's win. They will be back at the turf on Thursday, May 1, and will host Caledonia.

2014 Baseball April 28 vs. Grand Haven


Holland Christian played against Grand Haven on a very windy Monday afternoon. Nick Hill opened the bottom of the first by getting walked. Hill would eventually come home after Nate DeZwaan drove him in on a fielder's choice. In the third inning, Max Wierda scored off of a wild pitch. Nate DeZwaan scored Brandon Roon from third base by reaching on a bunt. On the very next play, Landon Brower grounded into a double play, but Nick Hill was able to come in from third base, making the score 4-2 after three innings. After a scoreless fourth inning, Grand Haven tied the game up at 4-4 in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Brandon Roon, a courtesy runner for Nate DeZwaan, scored off a wild pitch, making the score 5-4 in favor of the Maroons. That score would prove to be the final. Josh Sterenberg pitched four solid innings, followed by three shutout innings by Nate DeZwaan, who earned the Win. Each pitcher gave up only one hit. Offensively, Nate DeZwaan batted in two runs for the Maroons. Holland Christian will host a doubleheader against the Holland Dutch on Tuesday, April 29.

2014 Lacrosse April 24 @ Forest Hills Eastern

Holland Christian played Forest Hills Eastern on Tuesday. Ty Steggerda, Joe Spoelhof, and Allyn Anthony all scored for the Maroons in the first quarter. Justin Dykgraaf scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter, followed by another goal from Joe Spoelhof. Brad Houskamp and the Holland Christian defense held Forest Hills Eastern to one goal in the first half, and the Maroons took a 6-1 lead into halftime.
Each team scored three goals in the third quarter. Two goals came from Joe Spoelhof and the other came from Jon Nykamp. Jake Kalkman scored the lone goal for the Maroons in the fourth quarter. Forest Hills Eastern outscored the Maroons 2-1 in that quarter, but Holland Christian held on for the 10-6 victory. Joe Spoelhof led the Maroons with four goals and two assists.

 Holland Christian will host Spring Lake on Tuesday, April 29, at 7:15.

2014 Baseball April 24 vs. Hamilton

After dropping both games of the doubleheader against Hamilton, the Maroons hosted the Hawkeyes in the teams' third matchup of the week. Hamilton took a 2-0 lead early in the game. In the second inning, Josh York doubled in fellow sophomore David Williams from second base. In the third inning, Williams singled with the bases loaded, tying the game up at 2-2. The Maroons took the lead on the very next play, however, when Landon Brower crossed the plate due to a Hamilton error. The Maroons broke open the score in the fifth inning. Mike Mokma scored Nate DeZwaan by hitting a double to deep centerfield. Dan Lynch and Casey Meyaard each hit an RBI single in the fifth inning. Josh Sterenberg closed the inning with a 2 RBI double.

 Josh York earned himself the Win by striking out 7 and giving up 0 earned runs. Offensively, eight different batters got a hit, and 6 different batters earned an RBI. The Maroons improve to 5-4 on the season. Holland Christian will host Grand Haven on April 28.

2014 Lacrosse April 22 vs. Grand Rapids Catholic Central

Holland Christian hosted Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Tuesday night. Jake Kalkman scored the first two goals for the Maroons. Holland Christian led 4-1 after the first quarter thanks to goals from Jon Nykamp and Micah Bieri. Ty Steggerda, Isaac Nelson, and Joe Spoelhof all scored in the second quarter, giving the Maroons the 7-4 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, Allyn Anthony, Jon Nykamp, and Ty Steggerda all scored within the span of 40 seconds. Joe Spoelhof and Ty Steggerda added a goal apiece. The score after three quarters was 12-9 in favor of the Maroons.
Allyn Anthony and Ty Steggerda both scored in the fourth quarter, putting the lead out of the reach of Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The game ended with the Maroons on top 14-11.
Brad Houskamp played a great game at goalie, as he made 18 saves. Ty Steggerda had a great performance for the Maroons, scoring four goals while playing midfield. Jon Nykamp, Jake Kalkman, and Allyn Anthony all finished with two goals and three assists. Holland Christian's season record improves to 6-2 after tonight's victory.
Holland Christian will play at Forest Hills Eastern on Thursday, April 24. 

2014 Baseball April 22 Double Header @ Hamilton

The Maroons traveled to Hamilton on Monday to play a doubleheader against the Hawkeyes. Spencer Slenk got the Maroons on the board first with a bloop single to right field, scoring Casey Meyaard from second base. On the very next play, Nick Hill reached on an error, and Max Wierda crossed the plate to give the Maroons a 2-1 lead after two innings. In the sixth inning, Josh Sterenberg scored off of a throwing error by the Hamilton pitcher. Heading into the seventh inning, the game was tied 3-3. In the seventh inning, Landon Brower scored Nick Hill with a clutch RBI single. Hamilton would counter with a run of their own, however, sending the game into extra innings.
Mike Mokma gave the Maroons a 5-4 advantage after singling in Nick Hill in the top of the ninth inning. Hamilton once again countered with a sacrifice fly, sending the game into a tenth inning. Hamilton scored the game winning run in the tenth inning, and took the 6-5 victory in Game 1.
Mike Mokma pitched 12 strong innings for the Maroons, and struck out 10. Mokma finished with the no decision.

Game 2
David Williams opened the scoring for the Maroons in Game 2 off of a wild pitch. Mike Mokma continued the scoring by knocking in Nate DeZwaan from third base with an RBI single. At the end of the fourth inning, the Hawkeyes were winning 6-2. Josiah Coleman hit in the Maroons' third run by singling in David Williams. On the next play, Josh Sterenberg crossed the plate after Max Wierda reached on a fielder's choice. In the end, Hamilton came out on top 6-4. Sophomore Josh Sterenberg went 2 for 3 and scored a run for the Maroons in Game 2. Holland Christian will rematch the Hamilton Hawkeyes on Thursday, April 24, at Holland Christian.

2014 Baseball April 21 @ Zeeland East

Holland Christian returned to Zeeland on Monday, this time to play against the Zeeland East Chix. The Maroons loaded the bases in the first inning, but failed to score. The Chix managed to grab the 7-0 lead after the scoring six runs in the third inning. In the sixth inning, Landon Brower doubled to deep left field, which sent Mike Mokma to the plate with two runners in scoring position. Mokma hit a sacrifice fly to score Nate DeZwaan from third base for the Maroons' only run of the game. The Chix added three more runs in the sixth inning, making the final score 10-1.


Landon Brower went 2-3 with a single and a double. The Maroons combined for four hits and four walks. With tonight's loss, Holland Christian's record becomes 4-2. Holland Christian will play a doubleheader at Hamilton tomorrow, April 22, and then will host Hamilton on Thursday, April 24.

2014 Lacrosse April 19 @ West Ottawa

It was a perfect afternoon for lacrosse on Saturday as the Maroons took on the Panthers of West Ottawa. Jake Kalkman scored a goal for the Maroons in the first quarter, but West Ottawa answered with four goals, giving them a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. Luke Harbottle and Ty Steggerda both scored in the second, making the halftime score 4-3 in favor of West Ottawa.

 Jake Kalkman opened the second half scoring with his second goal of the game. West Ottawa, however, scored three goals in the final three minutes of the quarter, giving the Panthers the 7-4 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Justin Dykgraaf, Jon Nykamp, and Luke Harbottle all scored in the fourth quarter, but West Ottawa also scored three goals. The game came to a close with West Ottawa on top 10-7. Holland Christian will be back in action on Tuesday, April 22, as they host Grand Rapids Catholic Central. 

2014 Baseball April 19 Double Header vs. Fruitport

Holland Christian welcomed Fruitport to their field on Saturday for their second doubleheader of the season. The game was scoreless until Casey Meyaard stole home in the third inning. In the fourth inning, Josiah Coleman drilled a ball to the fence, clearing the bases for a 2 RBI double. Three batters later, Josh Sterenberg singled in Coleman from second base. Later in the inning, Nick Hill doubled to deep left, bringing in Casey Meyaard and Josh Sterenberg. Landon Brower then singled in Hill for the sixth run of the inning. After four innings, the Maroons were winning 7-0. Holland Christian added another run in the fifth inning when Max Wierda hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Mike Mokma from third.
Nate DeZwaan pitched five innings, gave up one hit, and struck out 8. Holland Christian outscored Fruitport 8-0, and outhit them 10-2.

In the second game, the scoring began by Nick Hill crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Nate DeZwaan. In the second inning, Holland Christian had two consecutive sacrifice suicide bunts. The first was by Brandt VanHeest, scoring Casey Meyaard. The second was by Nick Hill, scoring Josh Sterenberg. In the bottom of the third, Brandt Van Heest hit a 2 RBI single, scoring Josh York and Casey Meyaard. In the sixth inning, Brandt Van Heest crossed the plate on a Nick Hill single. Later in that inning, Mike Mokma hit a deep fly ball to the fence for a double, and scored Nate DeZwaan.


Brandt VanHeest had a great game offensively, going 1-1 and batted in 3 runs. Holland Christian pitchers Scott Edewaard, Landon Brower, and Mike Mokma allowed a combined 0 hits, 5 walks, and 8 strikeouts. Holland Christian's record improves to 4-1 with today's two victories. Holland Christian's next game will be played at Zeeland East on Monday, April 21.

2014 Lacrosse April 17 @ Northview


Holland Christian traveled to Northview on Thursday in search of their fifth victory of the season. Joe Spoelhof scored both goals for the Maroons in the first quarter, giving Holland Christian the 2-1 lead after one. The Maroons took a 6-2 lead into halftime thanks to goals from Micah Bieri, Ty Steggerda, Joe Spoelhof, and Jake Kalkman. Jon Nykamp had a great third quarter, scoring four goals in about five minutes. Jake Kalkman and Joe Spoelhof each added a goal, extending the Maroons lead to 12-3 heading into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, Justin Dykgraaf scored two goals in two minutes. Freshman Luke Harbottle also found the back of the net in the fourth quarter. Holland Christian finished with the 15-7 victory and improved their season record to 5-1. Holland Christian's next match will be played against West Ottawa at noon on Saturday, April 19, at Macatawa Bay Middle School. 

2014 Baseball April 17 @ Zeeland West

After splitting a double header just a day prior, the Maroons faced the Zeeland West Dux again on Thursday. The scoring began in the second inning when Josh Sterenberg reached on an error with the bases loaded, scoring two runs. On the very next play, Josiah Coleman cleared the bases with a 2 RBI double. Nick Hill doubled in another run, making the score 5-0 with 0 outs in the second inning. Nate DeZwaan continued the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly by Landon Brower. Josh York added another RBI single. The Maroons added two more runs when Josh Sterenberg reached on an error, plating Roon and Mokma. The second inning massacre of the Dux came to a close when Dan Lynch was walked with the bases loaded. After two innings, the Maroons were beating the Dux 11-0. Landon Brower hit a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning, making the score 12-1, hence ending the game by mercy rule.

Josh York pitched four innings, gave up 1 hit, and had 7 strikeouts. Mike Mokma and Josh York each went 2 for 4 on the day. Josiah Coleman and Landon Brower each finished with two RBIs.


Holland Christian will return home on Saturday, April 19, as they host Fruitport in a doubleheader. The first game will begin at 10 AM and the second game will follow.

2014 Baseball April 16 Double Header vs. Zeeland West

 After four cancelled games, Holland Christian finally began their season on Wednesday with a double header against Zeeland West. Holland Christian began the game's scoring in the third inning, when Nate DeZwaan scored off of a passed ball. In the fourth inning, Nick Hill doubled in Dan Lynch, making it a 2-0 lead for the Maroons. In the sixth inning, Casey Meyaard capitalized on a Zeeland West error, and DeZwaan had an RBI single, making the final score 4-0.
Starting sophomore pitcher Mike Mokma had an incredible performance in Game 1. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowed only one hit, and had 14 strikeouts. Nate DeZwaan came into the game in the seventh inning and had a 1-2-3 inning, including two strikeouts.

In the second game of the double header, Nick Hill started for the Maroons. Zeeland West scored five runs in the first inning, but failed to score for the rest of the game. In the third inning, Mike Mokma hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Dan Lynch from third base, opening the Game 2 scoring for the Maroons. Max Wierda hit an RBI infield single, scoring Nate DeZwaan. In the final inning, DeZwaan singled in Dan Lynch. Unfortunately, the Maroons would not overcome the deficit, and took the 5-3 loss. Dan Lynch went 2 for 3 in Game 2, and had 2 RBIs.
With today's games, Holland Christian's record stands at 1-1. The Maroons will be back in action on Thursday, April 17, as they will face the Dux again. That game will be played at Zeeland, and will begin at 4:15.

2014 Lacrosse April 1 @ Lowell

Holland Christian played their first away game of the season on Tuesday night against Lowell. The Maroons jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first quarter and never gave up the lead for the rest of the game. Holland Christian added 6 goals in the second quarter, extending their lead to 13-5 at halftime.
Each team scored twice in the third quarter, making it a 15-7 lead for the Maroons. 
Four 4th quarter Holland Christian goals put the lead out of reach for Lowell, and the game ended 19-9. 
Joe Spoelhof had an outstanding game, scoring 8 goals and assisting 3 more. Holland Christian's record improves to 3-1 on the season with tonight's victory. 
The Maroons will be back in action against Grand Rapids Christian on April 15.
