The Maroons played against the Wyoming Wolves tonight, in their
final game of the regular season. The score was back and forth for
the entire first quarter, and eventually settled to a 17-15 Wyoming
lead. In the final two minutes of the first half, Holland Christian
had a 31-24 lead, the biggest lead of the night. The second quarter
came to a close with a score of 31-28 in favor of the Maroons.
Wyoming outscored the Maroons 17-11 in the third quarter, giving
them a 45-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Maroons heated
up in the fourth quarter: Kyle Steigenga had three dunks and an
incredible 17 points. Holland Christian ended up defeating Wyoming
63-58.
Kyle Steigenga led the team with an amazing 31 points. Justin
Dykgraaf added 11 points, and Jared Dykstra scored 8. Holland
Christian finished the regular season with a 15-5 record; 7-3 in
conference.
Holland Christian also had the opportunity to honor seven seniors
tonight: Kyle Steigenga, Justin Dykgraaf, Max Wierda, Nathan Walters,
Nick Hill, Jared Dykstra, and Josh Maas. These seniors have been a
blessing to Holland Christian both on and off the court. On the
court, these seven seniors accounted for about 80% of the team's
points.
Holland Christian will begin districts on Monday, March 3, and
will play against the Hamilton Hawkeyes. All district games will be
held at the Civic Center.

2013-14 Boys Basketball February 25 @ West Ottawa
Holland Christian faced off against West Ottawa tonight, in their
last away game of the season. The first quarter came to a close with
the score 9-9. Nick Hill scored eight points in the 2nd
quarter, propelling the Maroons to a 26-24 lead at halftime.
Both teams struggled to score early on in the third quarter, but the Maroons ended up outscoring the Panthers 9-8 in the quarter, giving them a 35-32 lead heading into the final quarter. Holland Christian's 9 fourth quarter free throws sealed the 50-40 victory for the Maroons.
Leading the scoring tonight for the Maroons was Kyle Steigenga, with 14. Sam Vandersluis scored 12, and Nick Hill scored 10. With tonight's victory, Holland Christian's record improves to 14-5. Holland Christian will play their final game of the season on Thursday, February 27. That game will be held at the Civic Center at 7:00, and will be against Wyoming.
In other action tonight, Byron Center beat Zeeland West, creating a three-way tie for first place atop the OK Green Conference between Holland, Zeeland West, and the Holland Christian Maroons. Each of these teams finished with a 7-3 record in conference play.

2013-14 Boys Basketball February 24 vs. Unity Christian
The Maroons hosted the Unity Christian Crusaders on Monday night, in their last conference matchup. Holland
Christian struggled to score early on in the game. Kyle Steigenga
scored all of the Maroons' first quarter points, but Unity had a 14-4
lead going into the second quarter. Kyle Steigenga and Jared Dykstra
each tallied six points in the second quarter, cutting the Unity lead
to 24-16 at halftime.
In the second half, Unity's lead quickly began to diminish. Holland Christian scored 14 points in the third quarter, making the score 35-30 in favor of Unity. With five minutes remaining in the game, Nathan Walters hit a free throw to tie the game up at 35-35; Walters followed with a quick basket to put the Maroons up 37-35. Holland Christian's lead would grow to 41-36 with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Unity Christian fought back in the final seconds of regulation to tie the game at 43-43, sending the game into overtime.
Holland Christian scored two points in the four-minute overtime; both from free throws by Justin Dykgraaf. Unity Christian, however, scored four points. After overtime, the score was 47-45 in favor of Unity Christian. Kyle Steigenga led the Maroons with 21 points. Nathan Walters and Jared Dykstra each added 6. After tonight's loss, Holland Christian's record becomes 13-5. Holland Christian will be back in action tomorrow, February 25, at West Ottawa.

2013-14 Girls Competitive Cheer February 22 Regionals @ Rockford
Holland
Christian cheered their way to the Regional competition on Saturday
in Rockford. The Maroons cheered against 11 of the best teams in West
Michigan. In the first round, the girls scored 209.3. The Maroons
followed with a second round score of 186.38. In the third and final
round, the Maroons earned themselves a score of 272, giving them a
total of 659.68. This score would prove to be just short of sending
them to the next stage. Coach Gernaat said following her team's final
performance: “Looking back at the season, the team has come a long
way. We've learned that in order to get where we want to be, we've
got to have three solid rounds! They've worked hard to do that. I
think one of their biggest accomplishments is gaining confidence in
Round 3 especially. We will miss our three seniors, but we are
excited for next season!!”.

2013-14 Boys Basketball February 18 vs. Byron Center
Holland Christian hosted the Byron
Center Bulldogs on Tuesday night at the Civic Center. Sam Vandersluis
scored 7 points in the first quarter, boosting the Maroons to a 15-8
lead after the first quarter. Byron Center came back in the second
quarter, however, outscoring Holland Christian 14-4. The score at
halftime was 22-19 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The third quarter came to an exciting close as Kyle Steigenga
heaved a half-court shot that hit nothing but net, giving Holland
Christian a 38-31 lead after three quarters. That momentum carried
over into the fourth quarter. The quarter began by Nathan Walters
lobbing a ball towards the rim, where Kyle Steigenga threw it down
for the alley-oop dunk. The Maroons went on to win the game by a
score of 57-41.
Kyle Steigenga led the Maroons with 21 points; 19 of which came in the second half. Jared Dykstra hit 3 three-pointers and finished with 11 points. Sam Vandersluis added 9 points.
Holland Christian's record improves to 13-4 overall; 7-2 in the conference. Holland Christian will welcome their rivals from Unity Christian to the Civic Center on Friday, February 21, in their last Conference matchup of the season.

2013-14 Girls Competitive Cheer February 14 Districts @ Coopersville
Holland
Christian began their postseason on Friday night in Coopersville. The
Maroons began the day with a 206.8 first round score. The girls
earned themselves a great score of 190.38 in the second round. And in
the third and final round, they scored 285.1, giving them a total of
682.28. That score would earn the Maroons fourth place at Districts, which would be just enough to move on to
Regionals. Coming in third place was Tri-County, second was Catholic
Central, and earning first place was Comstock Park. Coach Gernaat
commented on her team's District performance, “We are very much
looking forward to competing at the Regional competition! We're gonna
work hard this next week at practice and hopefully compete at our
full potential next Saturday! We've got nothing to lose, so we plan
on leaving it all on the mat!” Holland Christian will be competing
at Regionals on Saturday, February 22, which will take place at
Rockford.

2013-14 Boys Basketball February 14 @ Holland
Holland Christian played against the Holland Dutch on Friday night, for the second time in six days. Last time, The Dutch won the game on a last second three-pointer, but tonight would prove to be different.
Both teams struggled to score early; the score was 8-7 Maroons after the first quarter. The Maroons earned 9 points in the second quarter, but the Dutch went into halftime with a 20-17 lead. Kyle Steigenga's 8 points in the third quarter gave the Maroons the 33-29 lead after the third quarter. With just under six minutes left in the game, Holland Christian was winning 38-31, which was the biggest lead for any team throughout the entire game. The Dutch, just like last game, would make a late comeback, tying the game 38-38 with two minutes remaining in the game. Late free throws by Kyle Steigenga and Justin Dykgraaf gave the Maroons the 41-38 victory over the Dutch.
Kyle Steigenga's 21 points in tonight's game would make him the highest scoring Maroon in the history of Holland Christian. Justin Dykgraaf added 7. Sam VanderSluis, Max Wierda, Nathan Walters, and Jared Dykstra each scored 3. Holland Christian's record improves to 12-4 on the season. Holland Christian will return home to the Civic Center on Tuesday, February 18, as they host the Byron Center Bulldogs.

2013-14 Girls Competitive Cheer February 11 @ Wayland
The Holland Christian girls participated in their final meet of the regular season on Tuesday. The Maroons cheered for solid scores in all three rounds of the meet. They scored 210 in the first round, followed by a 186.2 in the second round. Holland Christian scored a season-high 282.3 in the third round, giving them a total of 678.52. Out of the 9 teams that participated, the Maroons earned themselves 3rd place. Coach Gernaat commented on her team's meet, “This was definitely one of our best performances of the season. We've been working hard to get 3 solid and strong rounds, and we got that tonight. Round 1, 2, and 3 were the best I've seen them all season. And we're hoping to do the same thing on Friday at district finals!” Holland Christian's next meet will be the District meet, and will be held at Coopersville on Friday, February 14.

2013-14 Boys Basketball February 11 vs. Covenant Christian
Holland Christian hosted the Covenant Christian Chargers on Tuesday night, as they played in their fourth game in seven days. Holland Christian scored 13 points in the first quarter, giving them a 13-10 lead after the first. In the second quarter, Jared Dykstra and Kyle Steigenga each scored eight points. At halftime, the Maroons were leading the Chargers 33-26. In the third quarter, The Chargers hit multiple three-pointers, cutting the Maroons' lead to 44-42 going into the fourth. Holland Christian ran away with the lead in the fourth quarter. Holland Christian scored 19 points in the final quarter; 13 of which came from Kyle Steigenga. In the final seconds of the game, Kyle Steigenga threw down his 6th dunk of the game off of a baseline pass from Nathan Walters. Kyle Steigenga led the Maroons with a season-high 32 points. Jared Dykstra scored 12, and Nick Hill and Sam VanderSluis each scored 7. Holland Christian's record improves to 11-4 on the season. Holland Christian will play for their 12th win at 7:30 on Friday, February 14, as they look for revenge on the Holland Dutch.

2013-14 Girls Varsity Competitive Cheer February 8 @ DeltaPlex
Holland
Christian traveled to Grand Rapids on Saturday, to participate in the
Deltaplex invite. The Maroons cheered their way to a great first
round score of 207.5. In the second round, the girls earned
themselves 179.92 points. And in the third and final round, Holland
Christian scored 274, giving them a final score of 661.42. That score
would prove to be good enough to earn them 12th
place, behind some of the best teams in Michigan. Notre Dame Prep
earned first place, Comstock park earned second, and Grosse Ile
finished in third. The Maroons' next match will be on Tuesday,
February 11, as they cheer in the Wayland Jamboree.

Alumni vs. Staff game
The Holland Christian community united
at the Civic Center on Saturday night for a basketball game between the Staff and Alumni to raise money for the Holland Christian
band and orchestra's upcoming trip to Florida. Mr. Mike Phelps was
the coach for the Alumni and Mr. Troy Stahl was the coach for the
Staff. The Alumni dominated in the first quarter, outscoring the
Staff 10-4. The second quarter had a lot more action than the first.
For the Staff, Kyle Pett scored seven second-quarter points. On the other
side of the court, Ben Hill scored eight for the Alumni. At halftime, the
Alumni had a slim lead of 33-32.
The third quarter was also shifted
slightly towards the Alumni. Carissa Verkaik, the only female
alumnus, scored four points in the third quarter. Mr. Koeman countered
Verkaik with six points for the Staff. The third quarter ended with a
score of 46-45 in favor of the Alumni. The teams continued to battle
throughout the entirety of the fourth quarter. Despite the Alumni
hitting five three-pointers in the fourth quarter, the Staff was able to
finish with the 65-64 victory.
The leading scorer for the Alumni was
Ben Hill, who scored 17 points. Carissa Verkaik and Brian Konynenbelt
each scored eight. For the Staff, Caleb Nykamp led with 16 points,
followed closely by Mr. Kevin Koeman with 15.
2013-14 Boys Basketball February 8 vs Holland
After winning their game against
Hamilton less than 24 hours prior, the Maroons returned to the Civic
Center to take on the Holland Dutch. The Maroons started the game up
with 10 first quarter points. However, Holland's strong offense gave
the Dutch an 18-10 lead after the first quarter. Holland Christian
battled to score 9 points in the second quarter, but were
unfortunately outscored again by the Holland Dutch. The score was
33-19 in favor of the Dutch at halftime. As the second half
progressed, the game began to intensify. Sam VanderSluis scored 8
points in the third quarter, cutting the Dutch lead to 47-40 going
into the fourth quarter. The Maroons outscored the Dutch 13-6 in the
first seven minutes of the fourth quarter. Holland Christian got
fired up in the last minute with a layup from Justin Dykgraaf, tying
the game at 53-53. The Dutch ran the last possession of the game down
to the final second, where they shot a last second three-pointer to
give Holland the 56-53 victory over the Maroons. Sam VanderSluis
led the Maroons with 18 points. Kyle Steigenga scored 13, and Justin
Dykgraaf scored 7. With tonight's loss, the Maroons record drops to
10-4. Holland Christian will return to the Civic Center on Tuesday,
February 11, as they host Covenant Christian High School. Holland
Christian will have a rematch against the Holland Dutch on Friday,
February 14, at Holland High School.

2013-14 Boys Basketball February 7 vs Hamilton
Holland Christian teamed up with Hamilton on Friday, for the Two
Hearts For One Cause event. It took awhile for the teams to get
points on the board; the teams combined for only five points through
the first four minutes of play. The first quarter came to an end with
a score of 12-8 in favor of the Maroons. Kyle Steigenga, despite
being held scoreless in the first quarter, scored 10 points in the
second quarter. Justin Dykgraaf added nine second quarter points of
his own to give the Maroons a 34-24 lead at halftime. The third
quarter was very low scoring, as the teams combined for only eight
points throughout the entire quarter. Holland Christian entered the
fourth quarter with a 40-26 lead. The Maroons outscored the Hawkeyes
12-5 in the fourth quarter, giving Holland Christian the 52-31
victory. Justin Dykgraaf led the Maroons with 15 points. Kyle
Steigenga scored 12 and Nick Hill added 9. After tonight's victory,
Holland Christian's record improves to 10-3. The Maroons will be back
in action at the Civic Center at 4:30 in the afternoon on Saturday,
February 8, and will take on the Holland Dutch.

2013-14 Girls Varsity Competitive Cheer February 5 HOME
Holland
Christian participated in their one and only home meet of the season
on Wednesday night. Eight teams, including HC were involved in the
meet. Holland Christian scored 212.9 in the first round, and an
astounding score of 192.38 in the second round. The Maroons finished
the third round with a score of 271.6, giving them a total of 676.82.
This score earned Holland Christian 4th
place on the day. Hastings and Grand Rapids Catholic Central earned
2nd
and 3rd
places.
Thornapple
Kellogg finished in 1st
place.
Tonight
was also senior night for three Holland Christian seniors: Lindsey
Capel, Molly Geiselhart, and Alexis Van Doornik. All three of these
girls have participated in cheer for all four years of high school.
The
Maroons will participate in the Delta Plex Invite on Saturday,
February 8, which will take place at the Delta Plex in Grand Rapids.
2013-14 Boys Basketball February 4 @ Zeeland West
The Maroons played against Zeeland West on Tuesday. The first quarter ended with a score of 15-14 in favor of the Dux. Holland Christian fought back in the second quarter and outscored Zeeland West 16-9, giving them a 30-24 lead at halftime. Kyle Steigenga heated up in the third quarter, scoring 9 points, earning the Maroons a 46-41 lead after three quarters. Despite being up by five points going into the final quarter, the Maroons were not able to gain the victory. Holland Christian was outscored 22-9 in the fourth quarter, making the final score 63-55 in favor of Zeeland West. Leading the scoring tonight for the Maroons was Kyle Steigenga with 22 points. Nathan Walters scored 9, Sam VanderSluis scored 8, and Jared Dykstra scored 7. After tonight's loss, Holland Christian's record becomes 9-3. Holland Christian will look to bounce back from tonight's loss on Friday, February 7, as the Maroons host the Hamilton Hawkeyes in the 2 Hearts for 1 Cause event at 7:30 at the Civic Center.
