2014 Baseball District Tournament May 31@ Hamilton/Byron Center

By Seth Walters (Class of 2016)
Holland Christian played against Hamilton for the first game of the district tournament on Saturday. In the third inning, Nate DeZwaan drove in the game's first run. Hamilton countered with a run of their own, making the score 1-1 after three innings. Landon Brower led off the fourth inning with a double to deep centerfield. David Williams, the next batter, doubled to the same spot, sending Brower to the plate. Hamilton tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning off of an RBI single. David Williams drove in the Maroons' third run by singling in Mike Mokma. That run would prove to be the winning run, as Holland Christian won 3-2. Mike Mokma pitched all seven innings for the Maroons and struck out nine batters.

Byron Center beat Zeeland West in the first round of districts, and became the Maroons' opponent for Game 2. Byron Center got on the board first with a 3 RBI triple in the third inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Josh Sterenberg came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. Sterenberg popped the ball up to the second baseman. The ball dropped, and two runs came in, giving the Maroons new life. In the sixth inning, Nick Hill hit a suicide squeeze bunt in an attempt to score the tying run from third base. The bunt was successful, the run scored and Hill was safe at first. Hill was eventually driven in by Mike Mokma's single to centerfield. Holland Christian added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Dan Lynch lined to centerfield, scoring Josh Sterenberg. The Maroons faced the meat of the Bulldogs' order in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Nick Hill pitched an easy 1-2-3 inning. Sophomores Mike Mokma and Josh Sterenberg each had two hits. Nate DeZwaan pitched 3.2 innings and earned the no decision, while Nick Hill pitched 3.1 and earned the win. Hill and DeZwaan combined for five strikeouts.
