2013-14 Boys Basketball January 31 @ Unity Christian

Holland Christian continued their season on Friday night against their conference rival of Unity Christian. The first three quarters were very evenly matched, as the teams were never more than six points away from each other. The first quarter ended with a score of 11-9. After two quarters, the score was knotted up at 22-22. Max Wierda and Sam VanderSluis each scored 6 points in the third quarter, making the score 36-36 after the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Holland Christian quickly began to develop a lead. Kyle Steigenga scored 13 points for the Maroons in the fourth quarter, sealing the 61-53 victory. Leading the scoring for Holland Christian was Kyle Steigenga with a personal season-high 25 points. Sam VanderSluis scored 15, while Justin Dykgraaf and Max Wierda each contributed 8. Collectively, Holland Christian shot 91% from inside the arc. With tonight's win, the Maroons' win streak extends to 6 games, and their overall record improves to 9-2. Holland Christian's next game will be played at Zeeland West on Tuesday, February 4, at 7:00.


2013-14 Boys Basketball January 29 @ Byron Center

Holland Christian continued their season on Wednesday night in Byron Center, in search of their 5th consecutive victory. The Maroons jumped out to a 14-12 lead after the first quarter. Holland Christian scored a collective 16 points in the second quarter giving them a 30-24 lead going into halftime. The Maroons continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 19-16 in the third quarter, making the score 49-40 going into the fourth quarter. Holland Christian's 22 fourth quarter points sealed the 71-53 victory. Kyle Steigenga had a game-leading 19 points. Nathan Walters scored 13, and Justin Dykgraaf contributed 12. Holland Christian's 5-game win streak gives them an 8-2 record on the season. The next game will be played at Unity Christian High School on January 31.

2013-14 Girls Varsity Competitive Cheer January 22 @ Byron Center


The Maroons continued their season on Wednesday night in Byron Center. They began their performance scoring 207 in the first round and 184.08 in the second round. Holland Christian finished with a season high in the third round, scoring 279.8. This gave Holland Christian a total of 670.88, which earned the Maroons 4th place. Hastings ended up in third place, Grand Rapids Catholic Central in second, and Thornapple Kellogg finished in first. “I thought they performed very well last night. I was very proud of round 3; We have worked hard on it this week and the girls have begun to show a lot more confidence in this round!” Holland Christian's next meet will be held at East Kentwood on Saturday, January 25.

2013-14 Boys Basketball January 21 @ Western Michigan Christian


Holland Christian took on the Western Michigan Christian Warriors on Tuesday, in search of their 4th consecutive victory. The Maroons scored 12 points in the first quarter, and the defense was able to hold the Warriors to only 4 points. Holland Christian extended their lead in the second quarter, giving them a 26-10 lead at halftime. The Warriors outscored the Maroons 21-16 in the second half, however the Maroons would hold on to defeat the Warriors 42-31, extending their win streak to four games. Kyle Steigenga scored half of the Maroons' points tonight, with 21 points. Jared Dykstra and Sam VanderSluis each scored 6. After tonight's win, Holland Christian's record improves to 7-2. Holland Christian's next game will be held at the Civic Center on January 24, and will be against the Holland Dutch.

2013-14 Boys Basketball January 20 VS. East Grand Rapids

Holland Christian returned to the Civic Center on Monday to take on the Pioneers of East Grand Rapids. The Maroons jumped out to a huge lead in the first quarter, giving them a 23-8 advantage heading into the second. The Maroons added 15 more points in the second quarter. This gave Holland Christian a 38-19 lead at halftime.
The Maroons continued to dominate throughout the entire second half. Holland Christian combined for 17 third quarter points, extending their lead to 55-34 after the third. Holland Christian also scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory for the Maroons. Holland Christian set a season record with 72 points, and East Grand Rapids finished with 49.
Kyle Steigenga recorded 17 points, Jared Dykstra scored 15, and Sam Vandersluis added 14. Holland Christian's next game will be played at Western Michigan Christian on Tuesday, January 21.

2013-14 Boys Basketball January 17 @ Hamilton

Holland Christian took their talents to Hamilton on Friday to take on the Hawkeyes. The Maroons finished the first quarter with 8 unanswered points, which included an alley-oop dunk from Nathan Walters to Kyle Steigenga. This put the Maroons up by a score of17-9 at the end of the first quarter. Holland Christian scored 10 more points in the second quarter, giving them a 27-24 lead at halftime.
The Maroons continued their dominance in the second half. Justin Dykgraaf scored 7 of Holland Christian's 14 third quarter points. Holland Christian held Hamilton to only 4 points in the third quarter, making the score 41-28 going into the fourth quarter.

 Holland Christian tallied another 16 points in the fourth quarter, 10 of which being from free throws. The Maroons ended up winning 57-42. Justin Dykgraaf led the team with 16 points. Kyle Steigenga scored 9, and Sam Vandersluis and Nathan Walters each contributed 8. Holland Christian's record improves to 5-2. The next game will be played at Muskegon Western Michigan Christian on January 21.

2013-14 Girls Varsity Competitive Cheer January 15 @ Thornapple Kellogg


Holland Christian competed in the Thornapple Kellogg Jamboree on Wednesday. Holland Christian's first round score was 210.8, the second round score was 180.7. The Maroons' third and final round score was 270.5, giving them a total of 662 points. Of the nine teams at the Jamboree, Holland Christian took 4th. Coming in 3rd place was Grand Rapids Catholic Central, Hastings came in 2nd, and Thornapple Kellogg finished in 1st place. Coach Gernaat commented on her team's performance, “Our goal was to clean up and stick Round 3 and we accomplished that tonight! The girls have been very consistent in all three rounds!”. Holland Christian's next meet will be on Wednesday, January 22, and will be at Byron Center.

2013-14 Boys Basketball January 14 VS. Zeeland West

Holland Christian returned to the Civic Center on Tuesday to host the Zeeland West Dux. The Maroons started the game off strong, outscoring the Dux 20-14 in the first quarter. Holland Christian was limited to only six points in the 2nd quarter, but their 6 first half three-pointers led them to a 26-25 lead over the Dux at halftime.


 Sam VanderSluis tallied 11 points in the third quarter for the Maroons, sending them into the final quarter with a 41-37 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Dux were able to come back and tie the game at 46-46 with just a couple minutes remaining. However, the Maroons' 18 fourth quarter points propelled them to a 59-53 victory. The leading scorers for Holland Christian were Kyle Steigenga and Sam Vandersluis; each contributing 17 points. With tonight's win, Holland Christian's season record improves to 4-2. Holland Christian's next game will be played at Hamilton on Friday, January 17, and will begin at 7:30.

2013-14 Girls Varsity Competitive Cheer January 11 @ West Ottawa

West Ottawa Invitational, January 11.


 Holland Christian competed in the West Ottawa Invitational on Saturday, along with 22 other teams. Holland Christian scored 213.6 in the first round, followed by a 192.16 in the second. Holland Christian tallied 278.6 in the third round to give them a total of 685.04. This score would place them second in the Division 3 bracket. Paw Paw ended up winning that bracket. Coach Gernaat said following the invitational, “I was very pleased with the results. Our scores increased dramatically since our last competition.” Holland Christian's next meet will be held at Thornapple Kellogg High School on Wednesday, January 15.

2013-14 Boys Basketball January 10 @ South Christian

Holland Christian traveled to Grand Rapids on Friday to take on the undefeated South Christian Sailors. South Christian jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter, however Holland Christian rallied to cut the deficit to 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. Kyle Steigenga made 5/7 second quarter free throws, sending the game into Halftime with a score of 26-23 in favor of South Christian.
The Holland Christian defense came out strong in the second half. The Maroons defense prevented the Sailors from scoring for the first five minutes of the quarter. Despite this, South Christian finished the third quarter with a 37-36 lead. In the fourth quarter, Holland Christian scored a collective 12 points. However, South Christian tallied 25 points, which put the score out of reach for the Maroons. The game ended in a final score of 62-48.

Kyle Steigenga led the team with 24 points. Sam VanderSluis had 11, and Jared Dykstra followed with 7 points. After tonight's game, Holland Christian's record becomes 3-2. Holland Christian will return to the Civic Center on Tuesday, January 14, as they will host the Zeeland West Dux.

2013-14 Girls Varsity Competitive Cheer January 4 @ Grandville

Grandville Invitational
Holland Christian traveled to Grandville on Saturday to compete in the Grandville Invitational. Holland Christian was one of many teams involved in the event. The Maroons scored very well considering they were missing a girl. Holland Christian scored 206.8 in the first round, and 180.88 in the second round. Holland Christian came back and finished the third round with a score of 272.7, giving them a final score of 660.38. The Maroons ended up coming in third place. Paw Paw finished in second, and Otsego finished in first. Coach Gernaat commented on her team's performance: “Our goals today were to have pretty back walkovers in round 2 and to stick round 3 and hit all stunts. We accomplished both of those goals so I was very pleased!” Holland Christian's next match will be on Wednesday, January 8, as they will compete in the Zeeland West Jamboree.

Offensive Stats through 4 games


2013-14 Boys Basketball January 3 VS. Grandville

Holland Christian returned to the Civic Center on Friday to take on the Grandville Bulldogs. The first two quarters of the game were very evenly matched. The two teams headed into halftime with the score knotted up at 22-22.
At the end of the third quarter, Max Wierda hit a three-pointer at the buzzer giving the Maroons a 39-30 lead going into the final quarter. Holland Christian outscored Grandville 15-2 in the fourth quarter, sealing the 54-32 victory for the Maroons.
Jared Dykstra shot 4/5 from behind the arc, and finished with a team-leading 15 points. Kyle Steigenga added 13 points. Holland Christian improves to 3-1 on the season. Holland Christian will be back in action at the Civic Center on Tuesday, January 7, and will host East Grand Rapids.
