Holland Christian traveled to Byron
Center on Tuesday to play the first two games of a three game series.
Max Wierda drove in the first run of Game 1 by singling in Josh York
in the second inning. In the fifth inning, Josh Sterenberg scored
Brandon Roon off of a single, and then Landon Brower scored on the
same play because of a fielding error. Brandon Roon gave the Maroons
an insurance run in the seventh inning by scoring on a passed ball.
Byron Center scored a run in the last inning, but the Maroons earned
the 4-2 victory in Game 1.
Mike Mokma and Landon Brower each had
two base hits. Mike Mokma also led the way on the mound, pitching all
seven innings, and striking out 10 batters.
Holland Christian started off Game 2
with three runs in the first inning. Nick Hill scored the first run
off of an error. Mike Mokma crossed home plate after Brandon Roon
walked with the bases loaded. Josh Sterenberg scored the third run
off of a passed ball. Byron Center scored five runs over the course
of the next few innings, and held Holland Christian scoreless until
the top of the fifth. In the fifth inning, however, the Maroons
scored four more runs. Mike Mokma doubled to the fence, driving in
Nate DeZwaan. Mike Mokma later scored because of Landon Brower
grounding out. Josiah Coleman continued the scoring by hitting an RBI
single. Spencer Slenk singled up the middle, sending Josiah to the
plate. Holland Christian led 7-5 after five innings.
Byron Center threatened to score in
the bottom of the seventh inning, but was held scoreless due to some
great defensive plays. With men on first and third with nobody out,
Brandon Roon caught a fly ball, and then through out the runner who
tried to advance to home. Byron Center then scored a run, making it a
7-6 ball game. The game ended with Nick Hill making a diving catch in
centerfield, and the game ended with that same score.
Nick Hill pitched four solid innings,
and finished with the Win. Landon Brower came in for the final three
and was credited with the save.
Holland Christian's overall record
improves to 10-5, and will host Byron Center on Thursday.
