Holland Christian played a
non-conference game against Wayland Union on Wednesday. The Maroons
struck first in the second inning, as Josh Sterenberg scored on a
passed ball. Nate DeZwaan began the third inning with a double. On
the next play, Landon Brower hit a bloop single to right field that
scored DeZwaan. Holland Christian scored their third run of the game
when Casey Meyaard came home on a wild pitch. Mike Mokma made the
score 5-0 in the fourth inning when he hit a double to the fence that
scored Brandt VanHeest and Nick Hill.
In the fifth inning, Brandt VanHeest
hit a fielder's choice with the bases loaded that caused a run to
score. On the next play, Josh York advanced from third to home on a
throwing error by the catcher. With Brandt VanHeest in scoring
position, Nick Hill doubled to deep center, and Brandt VanHeest
scored. Nick Hill later rounded the bases off of a series of errors.
After five innings, the Maroons were up 9-0. The game was not over
yet, however, as Wayland rallied for six runs in the top of the
seventh inning. With the score 9-6 with two outs and a man on second,
Nate DeZwaan came in to relieve Josh Sterenberg, the starter. DeZwaan
threw only one pitch, but that one pitch would be enough to get them
out of the inning, and enough to earn him the save.
Josh Sterenberg pitched 6.2 innings
and struck out six batters. Nick Hill, Casey Meyaard, and Nate
DeZwaan all had two hits. Holland Christian's record improves to 13-6
on the season. Holland Christian will play their final conference
game of the season on Thursday, May 15, against Unity Christian.
