Holland Christian split a doubleheader
at Unity Christian on Tuesday. On Friday, the Maroons hosted Unity in
the final conference game of the season. David Williams got the
Maroons on the board in the first inning with a 2 RBI triple to the
right field fence. Williams earned his third RBI of the game when he
hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Nate DeZwaan from third base. Josh
Sterenberg followed by singling in fellow sophomore Mike Mokma,
making the score 4-0 after three innings.
In the fourth inning, Nick Hill hit a
short fly ball to right field that popped out of the rightfielder's
glove. Because of this, Josiah Coleman was able to cruise all the way
to home plate, making the score 5-0. In the top of the fifth inning,
however, Unity tied the game up at 5-5.
That tie was broken when Mike Mokma
hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Max Wierda. Landon Brower
came in with a clutch pinch-hit RBI single that gave the Maroons an
insurance run. Holland Christian had the 7-5 advantage going into the
final inning. Unity threatened to tie the game up in the seventh
inning by putting two men on with nobody out. Holland Christian was
able to hold the lead, however, thanks to a fly out and a game ending
double play. In the end, Holland Christian defeated Unity Christian
by a score of 7-5.
Josiah Coleman, Mike Mokma, and Nate
DeZwaan all had two hits. David Williams led the team with three
RBIs.
Josh York pitched 4.2 solid innings
and earned the no decision. Nick Hill pitched the final 2.1 innings
and earned the Win. Each pitcher struck out two batters.
With today's win, Holland Christian's
record improves to 14-6 with three games to play in the regular
season. They will host a doubleheader against Spring Lake on
Saturday, and will travel to Coopersville on Thursday.
