Holland Christian traveled to
Hudsonville on Tuesday to take on their conference rivals from Unity
Christian. Nick Hill and Mike Mokma both had RBI singles in the first
inning. Later in that inning, Josh Sterenberg grounded out to third
base, but Mike Mokma scored in the process. The score remained 3-0
until Unity scored a run in the bottom of the second.
In the fourth inning, Max Wierda
singled in Dan Lynch. Max Wierda later scored off of a single by Nick
Hill. With the bases loaded, David Williams tripled to deep right
field. On the next play, Josh Sterenberg hit a single, scoring
Williams for the sixth run of the inning. Holland Christian led 9-2
after four innings.
The Maroons continued the scoring in
the next inning. Nate DeZwaan hit an RBI double to deep centerfield,
then Mokma hit a double to deep centerfield, scoring DeZwaan. Holland
Christian added two more runs later in the inning to make it a 13-2
game heading into the bottom of the fifth. Unity Christian added a
run, but failed to come back, and the game ended 13-3.
Mike Mokma pitched all five innings
for the Maroons, and struck out nine. Offensively, Josh Sterenberg,
Nate DeZwaan, and Landon Brower both went 3 for 4. Mike Mokma, Nick
Hill, and Max Wierda all added two hits. Holland Christian combined
for a grand total of 16 hits.
The Maroons got on the board early in
Game 2 off of a fielder's choice. Unity responded with two runs in
their half of the inning. In the third inning, Landon Brower scored
Nick Hill off of a sacrifice fly to tie the game up at 2-2 after
three innings. In the top of the fifth, Mike Mokma scored on a
fielder's choice. Josiah Coleman added an insurance run by scoring
Josh Sterenberg on an infield single. Unity Christian added three
runs in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 5-4 in favor of
Unity. After five innings, the game was called for being “too
dark”. Unfortunately, the game ended in that score, and the Maroons
and the Crusaders split the doubleheader. Holland Christian's overall
record is now 12-6.
