Holland
Christian tipped off against Unity Christian on Friday night for the
district title. Unity's time-consuming strategy led to a very low
scoring first half. The Crusaders led 6-4 after the first quarter and
15-10 after the second.
The
pace of the game began to pick up in the second half. Matt Maas'
seven points in the third quarter gave Holland Christian a 28-24
lead. With less than a minute to play in regulation, the Maroons
found themselves defending a Unity possession with the score tied at
36-36. Holland Christian's strong defense prevented Unity from
getting a legitimate shot off, forcing the teams to fight for their
lives in a four minute overtime period.
Holland
Christian jumped out to an incredible 44-36 advantage at the
beginning of overtime. After a couple clutch Unity three-pointers,
the Crusaders made it a one possession game, 49-46. The Maroons,
however, held on to win it by a score of 51-48.
Sam
VanderSluis had 23 points, seven of which came in overtime. Matt Maas
followed with 13 points. Holland Christian will face West Catholic in
the regional semifinal at Hamilton on Monday at 8:00.
