Holland Christian kicked off
their season on Thursday night against Forest Hills Eastern. In the
first half, Maroons struggled to achieve enough first downs to get
down the field and get on the board. Forest Hills Eastern rallied for
three touchdowns over the course of the first quarter, giving the
Hawks a 21-0 lead over the Maroons.
Jared Stygstra began the
Maroons' drive in the second quarter with a 20 yard run to put them
at midfield. On the next play, Stygstra heaved a ball 35 yards
to sophomore Lukas Bruxvoort, who came down with the ball under
double coverage. A few plays later, Coach Caserta decided to go for
it on 4th and 10. That decision led to a 20 yard touchdown
pass from Stygstra to Brandon Riemersma to get the Maroons on the
board with ten minutes left in the first half. Forest Hills added a
couple of touchdowns before halftime, giving them a 35-7 lead.
Each team added a touchdown
in the second half. Holland Christian's came from a long drive
consisting of passes to Lukas Bruxvoort and rushes by David Williams.
That drive ended in a 10 yard touchdown pass to Caleb Brink. The game ended in
a disappointing 42-13 loss. The Maroons will be back in action on
Friday, September 5, as they travel to the east side of the state to
take on Adrian.
