Holland Christian played their first
game under the lights on Monday night against their non-conference
rivals from South Christian. In the first half, the Maroons outplayed
the Sailors in the categories of corner kicks, possession time, and
chances. With three minutes to play in the first, Allyn Anthony fired
a shot at the goal. The ball would have gone in the net if it wasn't
for a South Christian defender who managed to get his shoulder on the
ball. The teams went into halftime with a 0-0 tie.
A few minutes into the second half,
Josh Busscher ripped the ball past the South Christian goalie from 20
yards out to put the Maroons up 1-0. About ten minutes later, the
Sailors tied the game on a corner kick. Both teams had chances to
take the lead late in the game but neither capitalized. The game
ended in a 1-1 tie. Luke Schepers held the anchor in the goal by
stopping six shots. Coach DeBoer commented on his team: “We have a different team than last year. We have
to continue to take advantage of our chances.” Holland Christian's
record becomes 3-0-1 after tonight. Zeeland East will make a visit to
the HC Turf on Wednesday at 7:15.
