The Maroons began their season on
Tuesday afternoon against South Christian. Mike Mokma started the
game by striking out the first three Sailors in order. Brandon
Riemersma singled in Topher Leys in the bottom of the first to give
the Maroons an early 1-0 lead. Mokma retired every batter he faced
through the first four innings. Jack Huisman scored off a Josh
Sterenberg sacrifice in the bottom of the fourth. That insurance run
would prove to be very important. The Sailors scored a run in the top
of the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game up at 2-2 going into
the final frame. David Williams began the bottom of the seventh
inning with a walk. After a couple fielding errors by South
Christian, Williams rounded third and slid into home safely for a
walkoff Maroons win.
Riemersma and Williams finished with
two hits apiece.
Mokma struck out eight of the 17
batters that he faced in the five innings. Josh Sterenberg came in in
relief and ended up earning the W.
The Maroons will host a double header
with the Hamilton Hawkeyes on Tuesday, April 14.
