Despite the below freezing
temperatures, Holland Christian played their first game of the season
on Wednesday, as they welcomed Zeeland to the turf. The first quarter
ended with a 3-0 lead in favor of the Maroons, with goals coming from
Micah Bieri, Joe Spoelhof, and Jon Nykamp.
Nykamp began the second quarter by
scoring two more goals. Joe Spoelhof continued the Maroons' first
half dominance by scoring back-to-back goals midway through the
second quarter. In the closing seconds of the first half, Jon Nykamp
found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the game. The
Maroons took a commanding 8-1 lead into halftime.
Joe Spoelhof and Jake Kalkman each
tallied two goals in the third quarter. Freshman Luke Harbottle also
scored for the Maroons, giving them a 13-3 lead after three quarters.
Allyn Anthony, Joe Spoelhof, and Micah
Bieri all scored in the fourth quarter, sealing the 16-5 victory for
the Maroons. In his first varsity start, sophomore goalie Brad
Houskamp maintained the Maroons' lead by making multiple amazing
saves.
Holland Christian will host Rockford
on Saturday, March 22, at 1 PM at the HC Turf.
