2013-14 Boys Basketball March 10 @ Wyoming Godwin Heights (Regionals)

After winning the District tournament just a few days prior, Holland Christian traveled to Wyoming to take on Godwin Heights in the first regional matchup. Coming into the game, Godwin Heights was undefeated, and was ranked first of all Class B teams.
Holland Christian began the first quarter with a monstrous dunk by Kyle Steigenga. That quarter ended with a buzzer beater basket by Sam VanderSluis, and was fouled on the shot. VanderSluis made the free throw, sending the Maroons into the second quarter ahead 18-9. Godwin Heights stepped up their game in the second quarter, however, and sent the teams into halftime tied 27-27.
The Maroons scored 11 points in the third quarter, but Godwin's 14 points pushed them into the fourth quarter with a 41-38 lead over Holland Christian. The Maroons put up nine points in the fourth quarter, but were unable to regain the lead. Godwin Heights ended up winning the contest by a score of 57-47. Kyle Steigenga led the Maroons with 16 points. Sam VanderSluis scored 11, and Jared Dykstra scored finished with 8.

With tonight's loss, Holland Christian's season comes to a close with an overall record of 18-6. This season was the first season under Coach Mejeur, and it was full of a lot of accomplishments, including a Conference Co-Championship, and the District Title. Also, Kyle Steigenga finished his basketball career at Holland Christian with an outstanding 1,241 points, making him the highest scoring Maroon in history. Seven seniors played their last game for the Maroons tonight: Kyle Steigenga, Justin Dykgraaf, Max Wierda, Nathan Walters, Nick Hill, Jared Dykstra, and Josh Maas. Altogether, these seniors combined for 1,043 points on the season. Overall, it was a great season for the Maroons!
