The
Maroons played against the Zeeland West Dux on Friday night in a very
intense conference basketball game. Both teams got off to a very slow
start, combining for only 10 points in the first quarter. Tyler Hyma
put the Maroons on the board with a three-pointer but the Dux led
7-3. Mike Mokma, who hadn't played all year due to a leg injury, tied
the game up at 9-9 with a free-throw in the second quarter. Tyler
Hyma ended the half with another three-pointer to put the Maroons on
top 12-9 at halftime.
Sam
VanderSluis, who was held scoreless in the first half, put up eight
points in the third quarter as Holland Christian grasped a 25-24 lead
with just eight minutes remaining in regulation.
The
hope seemed to be lost with 20 seconds left on the clock. The Maroons
were down 36-34 and were forced to intentionally foul. The Dux
free-throw shooter missed, the Maroons got the rebound and Sam
VanderSluis tied the game with a layup with under five seconds to go.
The teams needed overtime to settle the 36-36 regulation score.
In
overtime, Alex Bosch drove the lane and bucketed a layup for the
first points in overtime. The Dux tied it back up with two
free-throws. Tyler Hyma made a three-pointer; Zeeland West responded
with a three-pointer of its own. Zeeland West scored a three-pointer
at the buzzer to win it 44-41.
Tyler
Hyma put up 15 points and set a season-high in three-pointers with
five. Sam VanderSluis added 12 points. Holland Christian will host
South Christian at the Civic Center on Tuesday at 7:00.
